Baja & Border News Translations: Kumeyaay Reserve in Tecate Invaded while City is Unaware of Situation; Clandestine Rocket Sales Targeted

Kumeyaay Reserve in Tecate Invaded while City is Unaware of Situation (Uniradio Informa, 12/25/12)

Tecate, BC - Despite the fact that indigenous Kumeyaay assert that they have lodged complaints at the city of Tecate against a person in the Neji farm village, who they assert is invading their reservation, the Municipal President of the municipality, Javier Urbalejo Cinco, is said to ignore the situation.

Norma Mesa, one of the inhabitants of the farm village asserts only residents of this reserve are to be located on the roadside from Tecate-Ensenada at around 40 Km, but it has been invaded by an individual for several years seeking its eventual sale and has encircled several hectares in an area considered reservation property by a presidential decree.

"All the residents in the community lease to the mestizo colonies so they are able to send their children to school and go to work. This is why we lost the language and customs, as well as our territory because in this part of our land, lives a lady who does not let us do projects in this area", denounced the Kumeyaay leader.

However after all of this, the councilman ignores the issue, while Kumeyaay claim to have flocked to Tecate municipal authorities and land reform officials, no one pays attention to the problem.

"I am not aware. We have close communication with them. I hope they make us aware of what happens there. I've always been very attentive to issues. Until you have documents in hand; logically if they contravene the Act we will take the necessary measures. It is something new," said the Mayor of Tecate. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/bajacalifornia/articulo165581.html

Clandestine Rocket Sales Targeted (Uniradio Informa, 12/24/12)

Mexicali, BC – A fireworks vending company committed acts of selling a fourth of their stock during the holidays, explained General Alfonso Duarte Mujica, Commander of the Military Second Region. They were referred as well, for not having the permission of the Mexican army to sell rockets, while civilian authorities urged them not to set-off rockets or light fires.

"Right now we are already coordinating and carrying out patrols with police, so as to prevent the illicit sale of pyrotechnics and likewise ensure there are no burning of tires traditionally carried out at this time," explained General Duarte Mujica. At the request of the Secretariat of Protection to the Environment (SPA), the municipality has not authorized mobile rocket sale sites, subordinating only the Cachanillas Cohetera to sell at their facilities.

The municipal ban includes sellers of firewood, reported the President of Mexicali Francisco Pérez Tejada Padilla. Both the army and the municipal police forbid the sale of clandestine rockets and take violators to the competent authorities who will be apprised of these activities. http://www.uniradioinforma.com/noticias/bajacalifornia/articulo165591.html
