The only way San Diegans have had a chance to see the works of Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain (Tony Manero, Post Mortem) was at the San Diego Latino Film Festival. The Academy's nomination of Larrain's latest, No, for best foreign film will in the least alert the general film-going public of his presence. Getting them to risk $11 on a film where the talking is written at the bottom of the screen is another story.

So much for my personal silver linings playbook. What a cornucopia of crap the Academy has gifted us with. How awful must it be if I'm rooting for a spielberg film to take home best adapted screenplay and a Bond picture to win best cinematography?

Lincoln led the pack with a dozen nominations including one for cinematographer, Janusz Kaminski. (John Wilkes Booth was a better shooter.)

Nominating the frightfully amateurish Beasts of the Southern Wild for anything other than best actress proves that the guilt-stricken Academy feels just terrible about what happened with this Hurricane Katrina mess.

Forget about snubbing Kathryn Bigelow and Ben Affleck: Taylor Swift didn’t receive a nomination for The Hunger Games. What are the remarkable pigs at the Academy thinking?

The ceremony will air Feb. 24. Who better than Seth MacFarlane -- to date his sole contribution to the art of cinema has been a potty-mouthed CGI Teddy Bear -- to host the show?
