A Chimp, a Kidpic, and a Technical Exercise Take Home San Diego Film Critics Society Top Honors

Any chance of Marty coming through town to accept the award He so richly deserves was dashed in favor of a middling technical exercise. The Artist, proof that Michel Hazanaviciuscan can trace, took home the San Diego Film Critics' best picture honors.

In the ten years that I have been a voting member, this is the most dismal crop of winners it's been my displeasure to have my name associated with. Albert Brooks presents a bold departure in Drive, and we award Nick Nolte for playing a drunk. And does a bazillion-dollar franchise like Harry Potter really need the group's support?

Lee Ann Kim

On a more pleasant note, we were initially going to table our discussion of who should recieve this year's Kyle Counts award, named after the late San Diego film critic, which honors those who have made contributions to film in the city. The voting ended earlier than anticipated, and in the time remaining I tossed out the name Lee Ann Kim, the driving force behind the San Diego Asian Film Foundation. Group president Anders Wright was quick to agree, and within three minutes, Lee Ann's nomination was approved by all.

Here are the winners. I take great pride in our choices of Brit Marling, Shailene Woodley, and most of all, Le Quattro Volte. As for the rest...somebody get me a Quaalude and a fifth of rubbing alcohol.
