At Petco Park, the section I sit in, developed into a "family" type atmosphere. If someone wasn't at a game, we wondered if something was wrong. Most of the time people advised if they would be gone. Often we were aware of who would be in those seats. We just bonded and it has been a good run. That will change for the 2009 season. Several of the group have decided not to renew their season tickets. There are plenty of reasons for such a decision: Outrageous beer prices, AAA ball players, continuing poor service at the concession stands, increasing prices on what is best described as mediocre food, non-responsive management ("what we have here is a failure to communicate"), cheap give aways (remember the Trevor clock?), and a Compadres club that has no relevance. Those are just a few of the issues. We pay a lot of money for these tickets & we love the game of baseball and will miss our friends, but will be making new ones.
That last statement may not be true. Ticket sales have to be way down. Padres management sent out postcards to season ticket holders asking us to rate (using the scale of 1 to 10, 1 being worst) the overall experience at Petco. Most people I know gave them 1, 2, or 3. I was told that over 900 of those cards were returned. If the team is playing well and the food is good, there is not much reason to return the card. People respond more when things are bad & they want to be heard. One example of lousy ideas, was the "premium" games, where the ticket prices were higher solely based on the quality of the opposing team?
Right now, my sports focus needs to turn to college basketball. I love to participate in all the online "pools" so I need to find out which teams are playing well enough to be in the bracketology game! Road to the Final Four, March Madness, crazy fun times. I keep hoping that a 16 seed will beat the number 1 seed in their quarter brackets. That seems to be the only game you can count on as a 16 seed has never advanced.
