RAIN

"It seems it never rains in southern California.... it pours, man it pours." Those are lyrics from a song released in 1972 by Albert Hammond. My mother & kid sister were visiting from Michigan. I was living in Fullerton (Orange County) at the time. It rained and it rained, then it rained some more. Streets were flooded and even the Santa Ana riverbed was overflowing (it is usually dry). Even Disneyland closed the park! The rain decided to stop for a day, so Mom & sis, aunt & cousins headed to Disneyland, along with every other person visiting or entertaining in Orange County. I think the park opened around 8 AM. I was working a half day and then going to Disneyland to have lunch & spend the rest of the day. Mom called me around 9 AM, to tell me the parking lot was full & Disneyland was closed to any more visitors. They had reached their capacity. They did manage to see a few things. Lines were REALLY long for the E ticket rides and the food areas were constantly packed.

It started raining again the next day. My Aunt said it was going to rain for 40 days & 40 nights! All the radio stations were playing the Albert Hammond song over & over. I knew the lyrics within a few days and have never forgotten them. We did manage to have a nice Christmas. My other sister had a one year old son who got treated like royalty for the holidays. Talk about a doting grandma. I know it was a terrible vacation as they did not get out to do much, but they & those of us who lived locally did have lots of time to visit, play UNO, poker, board games, etc.

This memory was brought to you by "rain" which we really need. It always seems to happen when the Buick Golf Tournament is played. Don't you love the TV stations?? They get positively giddy during rainy days. "STORM WATCH" is their lead in. The local meteorologists love it because there is actual weather to report. They have more to say than the: night & morning low clouds, 70 to 75 degrees, dropping to 60 at night.

I like the rain. I can sit in my apartment, sipping coffee/tea/hot chocolate, reading a book. Open the window a little & wrap up in a 'throw'. I even turn on the lava lamp & light a candle to set the mood.

So, enjoy it while you can. It doesn't last long around here. Once February is gone, it probably won't rain again til November or December.

So long
