Indonesian Legendary Ship “KRI Dewaruci” Landed in San Diego!!!

Indonesian legendary Tall Ship KRI Dewaruci finally making stop at the Port of San Diego, California USA on March 16, 2012. This is a class A barquentine built by H.C. Stolcken Soch and originally constructed in Germany in 1932, but was suspended due to World War II. The ship was completed in 1952 and launched in 1953. Her name and figurehead represent and display the mythological Indonesian god of truth and courage. This ship is the largest tall ship in the Indonesian fleet operated by the Indonesian Navy and used as a sail training vessel for naval cadets and serves as a goodwill ambassador for the country of Indonesia to the rest of the world. The ship also holds a mission to promote Indonesian Tourism through the “Wonderful Indonesia” brand.

Having set sail from the Naval Base of Surabaya, capital of East Java, on 15 January 2012, the majestic Navy Training tall ship “the Dewaruci” is currently on her voyage across the Pacific to join Operation Sail 2012 in the United States and to promote Indonesia's culture through cultural performances, parades, and meeting the locals. As the 59th voyage and having served for 60 years, this voyage of Dewaruci is undeniably outstanding since it is estimated to take on a total of approximately 277 days from January 15 to October 16, 2012.

After the Dewaruci left Surabaya, it stopped in Jayapura, Kwajelein, Honolulu and San Diego. On this long journey around the world, the Dewaruci is scheduled to visit 21 countries in Asia, Africa, America, and Europe. This voyage marks a record as the furthest and longest sailing time ever undertaken by Dewaruci, and also marks its last voyage before being finally retired.

This ship have general characteristics with displacement: 847 tons, length: 58.27 meters, beam: 9.45 meters, height: 36.48 meters, Draught: 405 m (1,328.74 feet), Propulsion: 1x 986 HP diesel, with a 4 blade propeller, speed: 10.5 knots with the engine 9 knots with a sails, complement: 81 crew and 75 cadets.

The Dewaruci always participates in tall ship races and events around the world. As a unique feature, the ship has her own marching band. In 2010 the Dewaruci's marching band delighted and entertained the crowds in Hartlepool, UK at the Tall Ships Crew Parade. Their energy, enthusiasm, and skill won them the prize for the best crew in the crew parade.
