Tech to Reconnect: Forests -- 08/18/17 at San Diego Zoo
Come see a live demonstration of Global Forest Link -- an award-winning S.T.E.A.M. (Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) education program that engages high school and middle school students in the collaborative analysis of local forest health and helps them explore the impact of environmental change factors. We are currently accepting participants for the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 programs. Youth learn about forest health from satellite images, participate in webinars, consult with industry experts, collect their own images and videos to validate observations, and interpret data using innovative visual analysis tools. Participants use the Global Forest Watch platform for evidence-based storytelling and share their results online via digital stories with peers in other cities and countries, giving them a local and global perspective. More than 2,000 students in the United States, Russia, Taiwan, Ecuador, and Nigeria are helping scientists monitor the health of forests around the world through this FREE educational program headquartered in San Diego. Global Forest Link, a program developed by San Diego based nonprofits Community Commons and Global SchoolNet, creates opportunities for youth to contribute valuable information to Global Forest Watch, a 20-year-old worldwide network that uses satellite imagery, Google Earth Engine and other scientific methods to monitor the health of tree-covered areas around the world. The San Diego Regional Urban Forests Council named Global Forest Link the Best Urban Forestry Educational Project for 2016 and Global Forest Link was awarded the 2017 Excellence in Education award from The California Urban Forest Council.
