Color in Pine Creek Wilderness (just west of Pine Valley)
Love this picture that I took with Galaxy 3, about two miles into a hike in Pine Creek Wilderness. Wish I knew what those trees were that provide the only bit of color.— January 27, 2014 2:01 p.m.
Anybody know what this is (Near Pine Valley, on Pine Creek Road)?
Curious as to what this object is. Anybody out there know? You can email me at [email protected]. I'm guessing some sort of bug trap.— August 17, 2013 8:11 p.m.
Jan Goldsmith scrambling to change City Charter to make recalling Filner easier back in early May
This campaign to oust Filner, this conspiracy, includes Donna Frye, the FBI (investigating his extortion of businesses) and the IRS (finding there is no non-profit, as Filner claimed, that funded his trip to Paris). I take my hat off to the organizers.— July 30, 2013 9:16 p.m.
Strange drinking at D'O Thai
this article affected me in this manner: I have no desire to visit the restaurant and no desire to read any more articles by the writer.— April 18, 2013 10:59 a.m.
Borrego Springs's Mud Caves
It is my opinion that this article grossly understates the dangers of exploring the caves in the Arroyo Tapiado area. It wasn't that long ago when an 'explorer' disappeared in this area and was only found after an extensive search having fallen into a hole or fallen through a thin surface of soil covering a hole. Quoting the late Jeremy Schad, Afoot and Afield in San Diego County,: "It is very dangerous to wander around topside in the pseudokarst valleys (those with sinkholes) and blind valleys (those ending in swallow holes). There would be no escape if one were to fall into some of these holes--or incipient holes." Going out into this area is not like a walk in the park. In addtion to the dangers associated with desert hiking, there are the addtional dangers of treating casually the real danger of misjudging the stability of the very ground under your feet.— March 30, 2013 8:23 p.m.

Tecolote Canyon Natural Park
I've lived near the canyon for many years. My boys played in the creek that runs through the canyon, a creek that in their time had many crawdads. I had a number of memorable experiences in the canyon, including several encounters with coyotes. Once, as I walked along the golf course, I kept my eye on a coyote who kept himself very visible on the course. Something made me look in another direction and there, very close, was another coyote. I wondered if they had tried to set me up. Are they that intelligent? Another time, walking home at dusk, I came around a turn in the trail and encountered a pack of two adults and several young. Both parties were eager to ignore the other. Once I saw a large, snow white owl. Used to see lots of red tailed hawks, but not so much anymore. And once, after a worker at the golf course had been robbed and shot to death, the police shut down the road out of the course. After a while, I hiked home through the canyon, leaving my car. I love this canyon. There are places where you can convince yourself you are not in the middle of a huge city.— March 27, 2013 1:43 p.m.
