Dear Petey, I'm assuming that you are either (1) very young, and still see the world in black and white, which is ok (sometimes I wish I was still young enough to know everything), or (2) you have a lot of frustration in your life, and vent anonymously on the internet, which is also ok (at least you're not shooting up a high school or shopping mall). I hope that you really do, as you say, have an open mind (although you then immediately say, "If you think you can change my mind on something, go ahead and try but remember this, I've heard MOST of the arguments." - Really? I learn something new every day). Based on that assumption, let me make the following observations: 1. This is not really about freedom of speech, or giving words more power than they should; it is about common decency and recognizing that we are all, as our Declaration of Independence so eloquently states, equal in dignity and deserve to be treated as such. 2. You are not really making any arguments; you just say that freedom of speech is sacred and then rail against anyone who questions you or your choice of words. It's not H.Jacobs who is apathetic - she is trying to change the world for her child - it is you who merely rages online at anyone who disagrees with you. What are you actually doing to make the world a better place? 3. If you are really interested in having an intelligent dialogue, I would also be interested to know if you believe in eugenics. Do you think that all fetuses that are less than perfect should be aborted?— August 31, 2009 3:55 p.m.
