The wild west is back in San Diego
Some streets have bicycle lanes, most do not. I understand bicycle rider safety as I once was an avid rider myself, but one is compelled to follow the laws set forth because of obvious reasons. That aside, if one should choose to ride on a sidewalk, then that person should give the pedestrian plenty of room when passing by, not get as close as possible to the person and nearly causing an accident which would no doubt cause injuries. Also a verbal warning or bell ringing to alert a pedestrian that a bicyclist is approaching from the rear would be a courtesy. This blatant disregard of the law puts people at risk, especially seniors. I think sidewalks could be shared if respect and some basic rules were followed.— April 11, 2018 5:01 a.m.
The wild west is back in San Diego
Did the city of El Cajon approve these yellow (OFO bikes) eyesores? Parked all over the place. No racks, just left in the way of pedestrians. The inconsiderate riders of these bicycles also quite often use the sidewalks (illegally) to get where theyr'e going. This is a dangerous practice mixing with pedestrians who may not be aware of some jerk riding fast - coming from behind and nearly colliding with said pedestrian! I've yet to see police enforcement of anyone riding a bicycle on the sidewalk. It's a state law. get off your lazy butt and earn your inflated paycheck!— April 10, 2018 8:12 a.m.
Dockless bikes and hepatitis
OFO (all yellow) bikes are now in El Cajon. I see some that are broken down in one way or another. Many are left in random places, often intruding into pedestrian areas. The worst issue I see though is wankers riding them carelessly (and recklessly) on sidewalks! Hey! The law clearly states that bicycles are NOT to be ridden upon a sidewalk! It's especially maddening when these jerks go whizzing past from behind with no warning and seemingly try to gets as close to a pedestrian as they can without actually running into someone. Seriously? There appears to be something wrong with the brain function of these clowns... Do the El Cajon police care? It would seem not, because I've witnessed bicycle riders many times merrily zipping along, darting out into the street and police cars rolling by without so much as glance. Is it troublesome to stop and write a ticket? A non enforcement policy? The police rk down on pedestrians jaywalking, so why not bicyclists illegally riding on a sidewalk? http://www.sandiegoreader.com/users/photos/2018/a…— April 10, 2018 7:58 a.m.
El Cajon's homeless feeding ban reconsidered
These 'homeless' people receive on average, $182 per month on their EBT (CalFresh) cards. How can they be starving? I have personally chatted with quite a few of these so called 'homeless' people and I can tell you this, many are there by choice because they have learned to 'game' the system and overall don't mind living this way. No bills, don't have to work, no responsibilities, and so on. free food sources, free clothing given to them, free blankets / sleeping bags and other camping gear. It is a rough existence, yet for many (quite a few recently out of jail or prison) this is a way of life they choose. You see them everywhere, lounging around, apparently not looking for work. Many abuse drugs and alcohol. To blame our city leaders for every cause of homelessness is what the uninformed do. The city of El Cajon for example, spends tens of thousands of tax dollars to help the less fortunate. Sadly though, only a few take the offers by designated entities to get off the streets and become productive again. It has become way too easy to get free benefits from the government for life, and not have to perform any work for what they get. Didn't used to be this way long ago. Tough changes need to be enacted, Homeless people often trash the very places where they camp (usually public) and hang out, much to the dismay of others. Being homeless should not equate to acting in an aberrant way. Handouts of food is done by many local places. It's done in a sanitary manner as well. Homeless people need to have designated areas to lounge around, so as not to annoy other residents (like at parks, the library, in front of coffee shops and fast food places) begging for money to supply their dirty habits. Homelessness seems to be the job of choice by many these days. "Will work for food"? That is truly a joke. Sad, very sad.— January 24, 2018 1:38 p.m.
El Cajon's homeless feeding ban reconsidered
Interesting the concern by the city of El Cajon officials regarding hepatitis A and citizen health - yet there's been little to no enforcement on the no smoking ban (tobacco & vaping) over many years. I think second hand smoke is a very serious health issue, yet our leaders and enforcers don't appear to give a damn. Cough! El Cajon is actually listed as a "smoke free" city. Really? That's a joke!— January 22, 2018 6:50 a.m.

El Cajon pro-pot interests sue city
And yet alcohol sales have increased over the years. Nearly every establishment which serves food in El Cajon, also serves either beer, or hard alcohol in various forms. I wonder how many of our politicians who voted against prop 64 consumes booze, even to the point of intoxication ? Short sighted city leaders filled with misinformation regarding Marijuana as an evil weed appear to be paranoid that bad things will happen. Seriously ? Consumers will just continue buying weed from their current 'underground' sources. Duh ! And guess what ? No tax revenues for the cities illegally banning it's sales and use. By the people - for the people ? Apparently not. It's crap like this that causes me to dislike politicians. They were voted in to abide by the will of the majority, and quickly change decisions to their own cause. El Cajon leaders, and many other cities across the nation simply do not listen to, nor care about the citizens needs or wants. I find this very disturbing considering the fact that WE the taxpayers and voters pay their outrageous salaries, medical coverage, vacations, pensions, etc. I will vote for new blood next election. Get rid of the 'good old boy' establishment.— December 7, 2017 10:24 a.m.

El Cajon no-smoking law flouted
Me thinks that all you naysayers need to get a life - what this issue boils down to is: RESPECT THOSE AROUND YOU - courtesy goes a very long way people!!! One's 'rights' should not infringe upon innocent citizens. Furthermore; I don't need to back up what I know and have seen with 'facts'. Common sense dictates that inhaling smoke into one's lungs cannot be healthy. Enough said. BYE BYE— October 1, 2009 4:36 p.m.
