That's why it's a dangerous game to read reviews before seeing movies. Not only do you go into the movie with the expectations created by someone else's opinion, but very often some key plot twists are spoiled. In this case, it seems like Duncan sets out to steal Precious's thunder: "We don’t find out all of that at once. It piles up." Personally, if I'm thinking of seeing a movie, I try to take a peek at the aggregate rating on rottentomatoes, but I save the actual reviews for afterward, when I compare my take with the reviewers', and maybe pick up on something I missed. Though I must say rottentomatoes steered me wrong on Bad Lieutenant...it's got an 86% approval rating, with several reviewers gushing over it, while Duncan was right all along: outside of Cage's enjoyable performance, the movie sucks.

Yup, the OB Tree Committee did a great job in setting up this year's Christmas tree, because as the video shows, the wind tried as hard as it could but couldn't manage to blow the tree down Newport Avenue.

No idea. Almost seems like an angry response to having to give up Push. "Oh, Push is being used by someone else, huh?! Well, we'll call it something that no one else would ever use!!"

"Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire" was originally called just "Push" but then its release was delayed, and in the meantime, another movie named "Push" came out. So a new name was needed, and someone decided to get a little crazy. Based on the reviews I've read, Bad Lieutenant sounds like a wild, violent ride that you either get or don't get, and either love or hate. Josh, you ought to see it and weigh in.

The Road
"The Road" evokes the wasted landscapes of Cormac McCarthy's novel faithfully and often spectacularly. The film also effectively channels the book's loving portrait of a father desperately doing his best to raise a child when life is literally a 24/7 battle for survival. But a few of director John Hillcoat's minor decisions weaken his grip on McCarthy's source material. The movie's score, for example, occasionally brings a tad too much heartfelt emotion into a world McCarthy intended to be more completely dominated by horror. Hillcoat coaxes compelling performances from Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Charlize Theron. And the movie's scenes adequately portray virtually every bit of action in the book. But the book's devotees might notice the film's omission of two particularly gruesome interludes -- and more importantly, the film's addition of a tiny but powerfully tone-moderating bit of extra plot development at the very end. In their pitch perfect adaptation of "No Country For Old Men," the Coen brothers brilliantly chose to score the movie without any music at all. "The Road" approaches this level of accuracy in channeling Cormac McCarthy, but leaves out a little of the bleakness that makes the book so remarkably dire.

Bonus Blog: Adam Lambert on the AMAs
"It has been years since I've watched a morning television show. And won't be watching one again soon -- boring." Maybe now you understand why Good Morning America cancelled Lambert? It's because people who enjoyed his sexual moves at the Music Awards aren't the same people who enjoy shows like Good Morning America. He mock-fellated his way out of the GMA target audience. Duh. Once GMA cut Lambert, the story took on new life. As pockets of protest erupted in the blogosphere, CBS Early Show had to re-book Lambert, just to capitalize on the controversy. And now as the dust settles, Lambert ends up with way more publicity than he would have without the kiss and the face-to-crotch maneuver, just in time to help boost his new record sales. Someone called it in an earlier comment - Lambert did a number from the Madonna book of marketing strategies. Nice of all of us to so willingly play our uncompensated parts.

Strolling Octoberfest with Lila
I'm not sure, but I think I remember being near a river, on downtown streets that were closed to vehicle traffic. That might have been at Henry Maier park. And it might have been Summerfest and not Oktoberfest that I enjoyed way back when. But definitely a Milwaukee fest with lots of Millers and bratwurst and Green Bay Packer fans. That's why it's a dangerous game to read reviews before seeing movies. Not only do you go into the movie with the expectations created by someone else's opinion, but very often some key plot twists are spoiled. In this case, it seems like Duncan sets out to steal Precious's thunder: "We don’t find out all of that at once. It piles up." Personally, if I'm thinking of seeing a movie, I try to take a peek at the aggregate rating on rottentomatoes, but I save the actual reviews for afterward, when I compare my take with the reviewers', and maybe pick up on something I missed. Though I must say rottentomatoes steered me wrong on Bad Lieutenant...it's got an 86% approval rating, with several reviewers gushing over it, while Duncan was right all along: outside of Cage's enjoyable performance, the movie sucks.— December 12, 2009 10:35 a.m.

"Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire" was originally called just "Push" but then its release was delayed, and in the meantime, another movie named "Push" came out. So a new name was needed, and someone decided to get a little crazy. Based on the reviews I've read, Bad Lieutenant sounds like a wild, violent ride that you either get or don't get, and either love or hate. The Road
"The Road" evokes the wasted landscapes of Cormac McCarthy's novel faithfully and often spectacularly. The film also effectively channels the book's loving portrait of a father desperately doing his best to raise a child when life is literally a 24/7 battle for survival. But a few of director John Hillcoat's minor decisions weaken his grip on McCarthy's source material. The movie's score, for example, occasionally brings a tad too much heartfelt emotion into a world McCarthy intended to be more completely dominated by horror. Hillcoat coaxes compelling performances from Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Charlize Theron. And the movie's scenes adequately portray virtually every bit of action in the book. But the book's devotees might notice the film's omission of two particularly gruesome interludes -- and more importantly, the film's addition of a tiny but powerfully tone-moderating bit of extra plot development at the very end. In their pitch perfect adaptation of "No Country For Old Men," the Coen brothers brilliantly chose to score the movie without any music at all. "The Road" approaches this level of accuracy in channeling Cormac McCarthy, but leaves out a little of the bleakness that makes the book so remarkably dire.— November 27, 2009 7:51 p.m.

"It has been years since I've watched a morning television show. And won't be watching one again soon -- boring." Maybe now you understand why Good Morning America cancelled Lambert? It's because people who enjoyed his sexual moves at the Music Awards aren't the same people who enjoy shows like Good Morning America. He mock-fellated his way out of the GMA target audience. Duh. Once GMA cut Lambert, the story took on new life. As pockets of protest erupted in the blogosphere, CBS Early Show had to re-book Lambert, just to capitalize on the controversy. And now as the dust settles, Lambert ends up with way more publicity than he would have without the kiss and the face-to-crotch maneuver, just in time to help boost his new record sales. Someone called it in an earlier comment - Lambert did a number from the Madonna book of marketing strategies. Nice of all of us to so willingly play our uncompensated parts.— November 25, 2009 11:03 a.m.
Strolling Octoberfest with Lila
I'm not sure, but I think I remember being near a river, on downtown streets that were closed to vehicle traffic. That might have been at Henry Maier park. And it might have been Summerfest and not Oktoberfest that I enjoyed way back when. But definitely a Milwaukee fest with lots of Millers and bratwurst and Green Bay Packer fans.
