Ian Campbell blasted in opera magazine
The opera world is small, and plenty of San Diegans shared the local reporting (which was excellent: Angela Carone at KPBS; Kinsee Morlan at Citybeat; James Chute at the U-T; and Don Bauder here) with fans around the world, via social media. I don't think Nic Reveles has been given enough credit for coming forward. He was the first staffer to break the silence following the news of the closure about attempts to reduce the budget after the 2008 meltdown, attempts Campbell waved away according to Reveles. His version of the frustration behind the scenes had a huge impact on the community and, I suspect, elsewhere. The reporting from the L.A. Times and the NY Times was not investigative; indeed, the NY Times seemed dismissive of the grassroots attempt to save our opera. The amendment Cohn reports was a nice catch. I agree, really wonderful story by the Opera News.— August 14, 2014 8:58 p.m.
UCSD nation's top school, says magazine
So the nation's top school refuses to help its libraries through a state budget shortfall? Four branches closed, including the Scripps library, housing the largest oceanographic collection in the world. A top institution should funds its research libraries, instead of watching them collapse.— August 28, 2013 midnight

So Long
You will be missed, Mr. Shepherd, for your passion about your subject; for your belief that cinema can be as profound as literature, music, art, or theater, and your conviction in holding films to that high standard; for your fearless vocabulary, which sent me running to my dictionary on many occasions; for your concise, humorous observations; for your fascinating digressions away from your topic sentences; and perhaps most of all, for being an unapologetic intellectual in a city full of yahoos, poseurs, and scam artists. Thank you for introducing me to Kiarostami, Resnais, and Melville. Your recommendations on Westerns and detective/crime films were always in line with my own tastes. As I read your final column, a copy of Dmytryck's Mirage arrived from Netflix, which I probably would not have sought without one of your rare 5-star ratings attached to it. Best wishes to you, and I hope you'll consider maintaining a blog just to air your thoughts occasionally!— November 13, 2010 12:12 p.m.
SDNN Was Effervescent Until Drop Dead Day
Don't know how recent postings relate to the above news, but Valerie Scher, David Elliott, and Pat Launer--all good reasons to go to the site--have all posted stories since Tuesday. I never understood how SDNN's business model was supposed to work, though. Seemed doomed to failure from Day 1.— June 4, 2010 1:55 p.m.
More Ugly Stats
If the Padres lowered the price of tickets and food and beverages at Petco, and made it easier to park, more people would turn up. They never should have left Qualcomm, where it was an affordable evening for a whole family to see a Pads game. And the city of San Diego wouldn't be in as great a financial mess as they are now if they hadn't taken out those higher-interest lease-revenue bonds to pay for Petco.— June 10, 2009 6:54 p.m.
