No more brew rooms for O.B.?
Apparently there's more to this story than meets the eye. From the West Coaster: "The key piece of info they coveted during the process were crime logs. During a meeting with the ABC on July 20, the Malkins were shown a letter from the SDPD dated June 29 stating it would not support the issuance of Little Miss’ OB license. The reason: the neighborhoods the Western Patrol Division serves (Ocean Beach, Hillcrest, La Playa, Linda Vista, Loma Portal, Midtown, Midway District, Mission Hills, Mission Valley West, Morena, Old Town, Point Loma Heights, Roseville-Fleetridge, Sunset Cliffs, University Heights and “Wooded Area”) had experienced an overall increase in crime and could not handle another ABC license issued in the area. The ABC said they would not go against the SDPD’s recommendation because they felt it was impossible to change their opinion. Determined to give that a try on their own, the Malkins asked to see the crime reports for the aforementioned communities. The ABC had those reports, but said they were not allowed to provide them to the Malkins, and directed them to obtain the data from the City. They attempted to do so, but after more unanswered calls, ended up downloading the information they needed from the City of San Diego’s website instead. Through this fact-finding exercise, they discovered that, although alcohol-related crime had gone up in the Western Patrol Division’s patrol area as a whole, it had gone down in OB by a whopping 40% since the November 2014 introduction of the neighborhood’s first brewery tasting room—Culture Brewing Company on Newport Avenue. Also, the number-one alcohol-related crime in OB is open-container violations, primarily on the beach. They presented this information to multiple City Councilmembers, the Mayor’s office and ABC, even going so far as to waive Little Miss’ ability to sell packaged beer or growlers to go, but never received an answer. The final straw was a call earlier this week when the Malkins say it seemed like someone at the ABC had decided they were going to deny the license long ago—possibly as far back as the meeting that they weren’t given the opportunity to attend—but nobody wanted to be the bearer of bad news. It prompted them to officially pull the plug on the OB project." Apparently the SDPD feels compelled to deny San Diegans their right to legally enjoy a San Diego brewed beer in their own city, based on their own intentionally misleading and fabricated statistics, and their own ineptitude / laziness to address pre-existing crime in the area unrelated to the breweries in question.— October 7, 2017 3:35 a.m.
Craft is dead. Now we drink Indie Beer
Craft should indeed be a moniker of quality, not quantity. Thus, craft beer would still be the appropriate term for any domestic beer brewed accordingly, whether it be a macro or microbrewry. If you wish to delineate between the two, you have the aforementioned terms already available: microbreweries being your smaller and local breweries, as well as the even smaller and more exclusive (in regards to availability/distribution) nano breweries. There's no need to create a new term solely to appease a handful of people on the Internet, when the adequate terminology already exists.— February 8, 2016 1:20 p.m.
Should Mayor Filner resign?
(Continued) The only unresolved question I have at this point, and a pressing question at that: Why on Earth did these women not come forth sooner? Why did they not do so before he was elected? If there were this many victims, spanning this many years, how is it no one of them would speak out over that time? I find that part extremely unusual, and unsettling at that. I suspect they may have been pressured to forward now by TPTB, to distract the populace from the current NSA scandal, economic disparities and various other endemic issues in our society, to keep the public debating yet another scandal. That does mean this is of no importance, but certainly less importance than the aforementioned issues. Regardless, what he did was inexcusable, and my opinion, shows he is unfit to lead. Mr. Filner: Do the right thing. Resign. Get professional help & apologize to your victims. Only then, and after those acts, can you once again work to build the public's trust, over time. If you cannot do all of the above, I suggest you simply resign and stop obstructing city business. Regards, Alan Haggard— August 8, 2013 4:12 p.m.
Should Mayor Filner resign?
I've been following Filner's political career for some years now, being a constituent in his prior Congressional district. I had corresponded with him via mail & e-mail on numerous occasions regarding legislation & political advocacy, and personally always found him to conduct himself professionally and to be supportive of Veterans, holding similar political ideologies to my own. During the mayoral election, I had learned of his participation in the Civil Rights movement, being arrested and refusing to be released early as a prisoner of conscience during the 'freedom rides' of that era. Needless to say, I had a tremendous amount of respect & support for the man. Keyword: Had.. Upon learning of his antics, of not just once, but consistently displaying a pattern of predating on women who worked for and around him, I could no longer support this man. Anyone in a professional setting, whether at work or in politics, should know better than to grope women and sexually harass them. That should have been more than obvious to Mr. Filner, being a public figure under the microscopic scrutiny of the press & the public. As such, I would like to see Mayor Filner do what is right for the city and for those whom he has violated in the past: to resign, without further incident. I believe, morally, he owes these women an apology as well. However, legally, I can see that is extremely unlikely to occur.. As for the reason behind his antics, none of which being justifiable, I believe Mr. Filner to be a textbook sociopath. Some of the careers that statistically attract the most sociopaths: CEOs, police, venture capitalists & politicians. A common trait among sociopaths: Lack of empathy for those who they perceive as beneath them or in the way of attaining their goals, little or no remorse for their actions, and a sense of entitlement that leads them to believe they can get away with pretty much anything. All of these traits have been revealed, as of late, to be exhibited by Mr. Filner, as well as the former Congressman & NYC mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner.— August 8, 2013 4:12 p.m.
