Beer for Brontos
This is a review? Where is Naomi Wise? She's the star of the Reader and you're replacing here with this guy? What a shame. Bring back Naomi, the best restaurant critic in San Diego.— June 3, 2011 10:06 p.m.
New Blue: Blue Point Coastal Cuisine
I agree with the previous post about Prado and Cohn restaurants. After our last mediocre meal there and the general indifference of the staff, we not been back in several years. Their restaurants are mediocre with little use of the top ingredients, and, instead, relying on a gimmick or theme. Fortunately San Diego has many new alternatives.— February 18, 2011 9:10 p.m.
Sweet Ideas
I'm a Solana Beach resident, love and frequent fine restaurants, but have stepped into Blanca just twice, both prior to the new chef. The last time I looked at the menu posted outside, went in, and tried ordering an item on it. My waiter said it was not available and they hadn't updated the posted menu for that week (It was Friday). Said they didn't have time as I looked around at an empty dining room with 3 waiters hovering in the corner. To me it showed poor management, not focusing on the details. While I'm venting I resent the restaurant grabbing a bunch of parking spaces next to the building, blocking them off, and then charging $3 for "valet", that means driving your car 30 feet to a space. Based on your review I may give it one more shot, but my expectations are not great. And your comments about the wine list are right on. My wife and I no longer frequent restaurants when the basic wines begin at $50 or $60. There's no excuse and we all know it's a game they play to squeeze more money from us. Restaurants should realize we have choices, and depriving us of the option of being able to order a moderately priced bottle of wine, means we go elsewhere.— August 26, 2010 10:17 p.m.
Ya Gotta Have a Gimmick
That's why I cancelled SD Magazine. All gloss and no substance.— June 11, 2010 12:56 p.m.
"Restaurant Week" at Palm, thru 5/31
My wife and I went to Palm a few monts ago with another couple and both the food and service were simply awful. We sent back an overdone dish and a replacement took 30 minutes with no apologies offered. The salads looked like they came from McDonalds. Or correction, at least McDonalds lettuce does not have brown edges. On this Saturday night more than half the tables were open and now we know why. If their restaurant week specials were free that would be too expensive for such poorly prepared and served food.— May 5, 2010 11:18 p.m.
Upside Down in the Crescent City
I happen to think Naomi Wise writes some of the most well-informed, intelligent and accurate reviews of any food reviewer, including those with national audiences. If the best you can do is criticize her career and then defend what apparently tries to pass for food as being overly spicy, you don't make Indigo any more appealing. Ms. Wise, unlike many reviewers, gets very specific about the ingredients, preparation and taste. She certainly needs no defending, but we're lucky to have her in San Diego. I don't know her, never met her, but do relish finding great restaurants and avoiding the dogs. Looks like she came through once more.— April 16, 2010 9:12 p.m.
