Sweetwater Union HS District Votes to Buy iPads for 7th-Graders
Just wanted to remind everyone that San Marcos Unified paid Brand $410K to go away before he bankrupted us. On the TV interview he said that "The iPads will save the district money since they won't have to update the textbooks every year." In our district, textbooks are actually only updated every seven years in a rotation, at about a million a year. The book publishers are still going to charge for the e-books, and they are not that much cheaper than print books. Many of the books have an access code that only allows a student to use if for one or two semesters. Yes, it is great that the students don't have to carry around the heavy books, but I believe that the costs will be exorbitant. Will the district have to come up with 4 million every year for each incoming class of 7th graders? When they graduate, those iBooks will be worn out or obsolete, so it will be never-ending expense. I am all for technology, but I don't think that this has been thought out very well. Beware Sweetwater, don't let Brand dazzle you with these baubles. I hope there will still be money to pay your teachers.— February 24, 2012 8:19 p.m.
