No Dragons
This is, hands down, the best production ever staged at our little Cygnet Theatre, proving that it can not only hold its own against, but thoroughly outdo anything at the Old Globe. I am always impressed with the plays chosen by the Cygnet each season, but they have really outdone themselves here. With absolutely no reservation, I can compare Sweeney Todd most favorably with the best of London's West End...all of the actors create thoroughly memorable characters, the songs are magnificent, the staging is vibrant (especially the blood-red brickwork)...DO NOT MISS THIS ONE!!!— April 29, 2010 2:51 p.m.
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
Spot on review! This play is not only the best thing the Cygnet has done (&, IMO, they've outshone the Old Globe this year & last), but I can easily compare it favorably to the very best that I've seen on London's West End! DO NOT MISS THIS!— April 29, 2010 2:37 p.m.
Live Wire Band -- 01/31/09 at Larry's Beach Club
Beyond the fact that I love the Old Globe's "Classics Up Close'' series, this play was wonderful--the best this season! Contrary to the tepid review here, I found the performances--especially in Act II--absolutely mesmerizing as the various layers of family dysfunction & guilt & regrets became exposed. PLEASE see it before it leaves!— June 8, 2009 1:54 p.m.
Crazee Burger
I'm not a big red meat eater, but my friends wanted "the best burgers in town,'' & I was pleasantly suprized to find 2 veggie burgers (1 made from portabella mushrooms), a Chinook salmon burger, & a crab burger on the menu, as well as 4 nice sized salads! And Great Parmesan cheese flavored fries! Funky little place with friendly servers & daily happy hour specials. A most pleasant surprise!— April 19, 2009 2:30 p.m.
Rice
Excellent meal! Seared scallops are to die for & fairly priced (as were all the appetizers). Entrees a bit exhorbitant, price-wise (about 10%-15% too high, paying for the atmosphere), but altogether worth it for the unique food & presentation & impeccable service. Bad acoustics (we could hear a table across the room), but comfy booths. We all need an indugence sometime, so treat yourself & enjoy!— March 28, 2009 9:59 p.m.
The Cottage
A perfect Sunday afternoon in La Jolla! The vegetables in the omelette taste like they were just picked fresh that morning & the pumpkin muffins were sinful...We were even able to tie our dog up to the outside of the patio fence right next to us while we ate...fast service, even at their busiest time...Do not miss this gem!!!— January 25, 2009 6:44 p.m.
European Delicatessen
Yes, they're still there, in the block before you get to Ross heading north.— December 5, 2008 10:50 a.m.
We'll See No More of Giants
What a beautiful tribute, John...brought me to tears all over again, where I've been frequently ever since hearing about Chuck's death. Those of us in the San Diego bookselling community, and all bibliophiles who knew him, and all who became readers because of what they encountered upon entering the magical emporium that is Wahrenbrocks, mourn the passing of one of the last, truly great "bookmen,'' but even more, the loss of the wonderful man whom you describe so movingly. Chuck started me on my Edward Gorey collection over 25 years ago, and shared many wonderful stories about him with me as we added to my library over the years. Thanks for sharing your memories and writing such a beautiful homage. Kathlyn H. Stewart (Gargoyle Books)— September 4, 2008 2:18 p.m.
