...and then a politician listened to people in need
"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Ghandi— January 26, 2016 7:29 p.m.
U-T circulation plunging
Ponzi - You're not alone. Late or no delivery has become the norm for me. I stopped calling them some time ago because it didn't do any good. By the way,the last time I called I spoke with someone in Tuscon, Arizona! Things have gotten so bad at the UT that they failed to take the automatic deduction from my checking account last month. I'm definitely not calling that one in. Like they say, you get what you pay for.— January 22, 2016 9:23 a.m.
Our son's autism test score was down to 15
Here is San Diego City's code which permits pygmy goats. Maybe Chula Vista's city council should take a look at it. http://www.sandiego.gov/development-services/pdf/…— January 16, 2016 2:47 p.m.
Brace for culture change, Chula Vista
--"Parking on Third Avenue is an issue and will become more of an issue,” said Chula Vista councilmember John McCann shortly before the council voted unanimously to sell two lots that provide parking spaces for the downtown area.-- Realizing in hindsight that a mistake was made might be excusable, but admitting beforehand that the actions you're about to take will knowingly aggravate an existing issue isn't. The first paragraph of this article must have heads shaking in Chula Vista. cvret: Your point regarding the mayor wanting you to walk from Rancho Del Rey to the farmers' market is well taken. She says a large body of evidence shows that future generations will be relying less on their cars and more on mass transit. Really? Does she get a car allowance? Is she willing to give that up and show by example how convenient it is to get from point A to point B? Every time I check for directions online I see mass-transit-time to be 3 to 4 times longer than by car, and that's if mass-transit to your destination is even available.— January 5, 2016 10:32 a.m.
Chula Vista condo plan misses mark again
sjtorres: To say, … "Just pick one, homeless camps, etc. or vitality…" is really over simplifying the issue. It sounds like the residents agree that an upgrade of the area would be good and aren't just saying no to development. However, it is the developer who is unwilling to compromise and change his "economic model". What I read is the project's opponents appear to simply be asking for a compromise regarding the size of the project, to change portions of it to avoid balconies overlooking their backyards, and provisions to deal with parking. In their words, “Give us a project that fits”. Hopefully the Planning Commision will be sensitive to the needs of the community. This developer seems to care more about his bottom line.— December 21, 2015 10:33 a.m.
Chula Vista's cleanup act
Some have said EyeCandy duped the city when they deceivingly listed themselves as *"Amber Hand Entertainment, Inc. Chula Vista Comedy Club"* on their license application. They did, and it was obviously wrong, and unacceptable. But, did the city do any checking... at all? Maybe they could've done a simple google search of Mr. Welty or his lawyer Mr. Diamond? Didn't the city's building inspectors wonder what the stripper poles on a dance floor were for? Regarding the 7mile Casino, how could the city, with the chief of police's blessing, approve the expansion of an establishment that was under investigation and had recently been raided by the FBI? If the casino's Mr. Souza is found guilty, then the politicians owe it to the taxpayers to offer all of the donations they received from him to be deposited into the city's legal fund. Whether or not one likes gambling or strip joints, we shouldn't have to pay for the city's lack of due diligence.— December 14, 2015 11:48 a.m.
Chula Vista fetes Seven Mile Casino as FBI investigates it
Looks like Pfingst was right on the money! Where was the local police chief, Bejarano?— December 9, 2015 6:09 p.m.
Vogue Theater for sale — not to be destroyed
eastlaker - You're right, looking at old photos (on-line) you see that the façade has undergone some changes. I wonder if the original version will be restored. Also, it would've been nice if the city had protected the interior's historic integrity as well. This UT article about the Ken cinema's survival says there are only two single-screen theaters left in San Diego County.[http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/… Could Landmark Theaters be enticed? It might take a switch to digital to make it work.— December 7, 2015 10:39 a.m.
Chula Vista fetes Seven Mile Casino as FBI investigates it
All of these businesses were apparently lobbied for. It seems that the public should not only have a right know who these lobbyists are, but when and where their meetings with public officials take place along with their agendas. lt should be part of the public record for all to see. To quote Californians Aware president, Donna Frye from a related Reader article, “The public has a right to know who is meeting with their elected officials and why.…." Isn't it time for an ordinance in Chula Vista that would guarantee that right? By the way, is it true that this Casino is open 24/7?— November 20, 2015 9:02 a.m.
Chula Vista goes all 21st Century
So, it's been nine years (!) since the Chula Vista City Council said they'd reconsider requiring lobbyists to register. Can the public have it placed on the agenda, or will we have to wait until the city council finally decides, as member McCann suggested in 2006, to "take a look" at it? There's certainly, as he also said, "enough concern".— November 14, 2015 9:20 a.m.
