Why Mexicans Hated Elvis, Brian Wilson Busted in Balboa Park, plus 50 Historic San Diego Concerts: 1917 - 2005
It has now been finally learned, thanks to music critic and former record executive Heber Pompeyo, a Mexican national, that the government official who sent the letter to Presley, and was responsible for later defaming him, as a racist and as a homosexual, was the then Regente (Mayor) of Mexico City, Ernesto Peralta Uruchurtu (born 1907-), in conjunction with columnist Federico de Leon, his friend at "Ultimas Noticias", a newspaper from the Mexican capital, in whose "6PM" column the defamation first appeared, on 16 February, 1957.— June 24, 2008 9:43 p.m.

Correction, the San Diego concerts which followed the 3 April appearance at the Milton Berle Show took place on 4-5th April 1956, (not on the 8-9th)— June 23, 2008 5 p.m.

And one last thing. Presley did not wear his Gold Lame suit, whether we are talking about the jacket, or the pants, or both, until March of 1957, and this took place 11 months after the San Diego concerts which, as we know, took place on 8 and 9th April of the previous year. Moreover, Nudie, the tailor who made it, received the order for the Gold Lame suit, sometime in early March of 1957 (while Presley was filming "Jailhouse Rock"), with the suit being delivered to Presley, in Memphis, a few days before his show at International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Illinois, which took place on the 28th of March of 1957, to be precise. With all these inconsistencies in Mr. Martin´s story, I am now inclined to believe the whole Martin experience, with Elvis backstage, that is, may amount to just a half-baked fabrication...— June 23, 2008 4:13 p.m.

Now regarding the article on Presley's 1956 concerts in San Diego, please note that no matter what DJ Happy Hare Martin may say, about his meeting with Presley backstage, and his statement that Presley had black hair, but was blond below, or something to that effect, as well as everything that he says followed, this could not have happened, at least not when he says it did. And here´s why: Presley dyed his hair black on October of 1956. Presley was, still is, the most photographed celebity in history, so proof that this could not have been the case is not just irrefutable but, what's more, is readily available. If Presley asked him not to tell, he was probably referring to his having been seen naked by him, and not because there was a big disparity between the color of his hair, which was dirt blond, and the color of his hair, down below about which no one, to this date, has made a statement, the 1,234 Elvis biographies in print notwithstanding.— June 23, 2008 3:54 p.m.

I want to comment on the two stories about Elvis Presley, starting with the reasons why Elvis was hated by mexicans. The story is about as close as what actually happens as I've ever read, so I want to congratulate Jay Allen Sanford for a wonderful job done. The exact dates are as follows. i) Early 1957. The letter from the Govt. official is sent to Presley. ii) Early 1957, plus 2 weeks, Presley returns the check, regrets he´s tied up, with contracts all through 1957. iii) A week later, an article appears in "Excelsior", saying Presley says "Mexican women are ugly, even uglier than African American women". iv) A week later, Presley is banned from radio, the backlash begins... v) A week later, still in 1957, Presley, with an interpreter, calls Radio "Exitos", denies ever saying anything of that nature. vi) Early 1959, "Melodia Sinistra" ("King Creole"), with hardly any advertising, opens at the "Las Americas" theatre, the events being exactly as mentioned in Mr. Sanford´s article, which omits the person who died as a result of complications from the stabbings. lawyers ateke over, a settlement is arrived at, the press does not report about the incident, at all. vii) Early 1959, plus one week, Presley`s records are now banned in Mexico´s record stores. So, recapping, no airplay since 1957, and now, no sales starting in 1959. viii) Early 1961, "Cafe Europa" ("G.I.Blues"), opens at the "Las Americas" theatre, with a similar thing happening, although with no one actually getting hurt, so this time the Government bans his movies. ix) In March of 1962, and unaware of how "sensitive" Elvis´ situation in Mexico has become over the preceeding four years, producer Hal Wallis and Paramount strike a deal for Elvis to star in "Fun in Acapulco". Production is underway, when finally Presley's manager, Tom Parker, is told about the details, so the crew goes ahead and travels to Mexico, with Elvis the only one staying in Los Angeles, where all his scenes are shot. In the meantime, s double fills in for him in Mexico. ix) The Elvis radio airplay, records store and film ban lasts until 1971, when "That's the way it is" opens at a Mexico City theatre.— June 23, 2008 3:53 p.m.
