Lowery’s demise
In 2005 I wrote for the U-T about the foundation's ties to the Lowery firm and about Lowery's lucrative, earmarks-fueled ties to Lewis. In the course of my reporting, I contacted Frea Sladek, who assured me that she would speak to me at length about the foundation's work with Lowery. She did not honor that commitment. Instead, she pushed a public relations flak on me, who promptly declared that the foundation had no obligation to speak with me or any other reporter. So much for public accountability. Meanwhile, the foundation was paying Lowery $200,000 per year to bring home the bacon from Jerry Lewis' appropriations committees. All the time, of course, Lowery was raising the hundreds of thousands of dollars for Jerry Lewis that then at the beginning of 2005 bought Lewis the chairmanship of the full Appropriations Committee. Perhaps now the foundation would like to provide some transparency about what taxpayers got for the millions of dollars of earmarks that Lewis and Lowery stuffed into its coffers. A little public accountability might be good for its soul,— March 6, 2008 4:24 p.m.
