The Attack!! Retreats
Thanks for the shout-out, Jay! Good article about the Attack!! I sympathize with them. San Diego spends a lot of time touting itself as an important music mecca, but the predictable lack of attendance at local shows is a well-kept, dirty secret that virtually no one ever talks about. Most bands don't like to admit how few people actually go to their shows or buy their cds -- it's embarrassing, but sometimes the silence surrounding this issue can feel almost cult-like.— May 27, 2010 12:52 p.m.
From a Daffodil to a Fowl
“This time around, I found the right people, people who could play and who wanted to have fun,” said Jerman during a December 1 interview. “This time around it’s about the songs, the right amount of reverb. This time, I didn’t have to settle.” Nice. After three years on hiatus, one of only two quotable things that Ben had to say is a direct dig on his former Daffodils band mates. So, since I am one of those two other people who were in the Daffodils, and since Ben failed to make any exceptions in his statements, I assume he's talking about me as much as he is talking about anyone else. In my defense, I would like it to go on record that, contrary to Ben's inaccurate recollections, I actually do like having fun. I'm actually a pretty good bass player too. In fact, I have about twice as many years experience playing bass as Ben does guitar, and I have been involved in playing music with groups of people in a variety of situations from rock bands to symphony orchestras since I was about 8 years old -- that's 30 years... So, Ben, you were "settling"? Whatever. I would also like to call attention to the statement about the "right amount of reverb." Ben was the only guitar player in the band, so if he was unhappy about the reverb, then that was strictly his own fault. And also, we weren't about to record an EP, we had just finished recording an awesome EP with Gar Woods of Beehive and the Barracudas and The Nightmarchers (among other awesome bands). 'Too bad the cd never got to see the light of day; it was great! I even still listen to it from time to time, although I probably won't be doing that for a while now... So, if crapping on his former bandmates is how Ben is going to hit the ground running with his new band Little Fowl, why not just call themselves "Little S***hawk" instead? Jaye Furlonger P.S. To Ben's new band: Make sure to keep up with your side projects! As one Casbah bartender casually informed me right after the Daffodils spontaneously and unceremoniously broke up, starting bands and breaking them up right when things start getting good is Ben's long-running "M.O." I wish I'd known that sooner.— December 11, 2009 3:24 p.m.
