Ocean Beach summer of ’79
I am pretty sure the Interstate 8 shooting was by a foreign exchange student. He had been living with a local family. Something in him snapped. He killed the maid, stole the owner's Porsche and went to the Presidio and started shooting at cars. He was shot and killed by officers at the scene. I was a senior at SDSU at the time and this is a vague memory. But the time frame fits. I welcome any corrections if I am way off base or have a few details wrong. I moved to OB the next year and have lived here ever since.— March 24, 2022 7:08 a.m.
Point Loma caves cleaned out once more
This would never happen in Yosemite or Cabrillo National Monument. The city of San Diego has never taken its parklands seriously. Yes "Park & Rec" employees waddle around and empty trash cans in certain areas. But ask one of them about this situation and they will just shrug and point their fingers to the police or lifeguards. Memorial Day is looming. Go to Fiesta Island next Tuesday.....then Wednesday and maybe even Thursday and see the overflowing trash cans being emptied by the wind and seagulls. We need park rangers with the authority to make arrests and the ability to call in rapid response clean up teams. Trash begets other trash. Most people won't litter a pristine area but many, if it is already sullied, will figure what the heck and toss more trash on trash. It is a matter of will and funding. We have never had city leaders with the vision to make our city parks as spectacular as our national ones.— May 23, 2019 8:43 a.m.
Raze the arena?
Money is fungible. Proceeds from the sale of the Sports Arena property will not look, smell or feel any different than our tax dollars flowing in. Therefore it should be used for needed infrastructure repairs and/or new projects that benefit taxpayers. Those millions should not flow to the Spanos family. The mayor has obviously not studied history and learned the lessons of the ticket guarantee scandal. In my opinion it would be short sighted to sell when the lease is up. We should lease for 30 years to the highest bidder willing to develop something compatible with the surrounding area. At the end of that term who knows what the land use needs of the city will be. But we will have that land back and have the option to change its use to conform to the needs at that time.— October 17, 2014 9:14 a.m.
