U-T to be sold to L.A. Times parent for $85 million
Don, If the deal does not include the building and the presses, then the LA Times must be planning on going online here. I worked at the UT in Circulation and specifically Distribution. The presses started at 11:30 p.m. If they try to print at a plant owned by the Times north of San Diego it would be a disaster, if it is even possible in the first place, given the time constraints. When the Chargers were in the Superbowl, we had a meeting with Jerry Warren and Karin Winner to plan plan how many more papers to print if the Chargers won. At this meeting, it became clear that upper management does not understand the Circulation and Distribution process. The newspaper industry is a dinosaur. At least Manchester realized this and got out. David Copley couldn't see this coming and had to sell cheap. This story should get better everyday for the bloggers. gekko— May 10, 2015 6:29 p.m.
Supreme Court rules in favor of carriers
Don, I wish this court ruling had been made under the Copley regime. Helen and David would have been livid. Gekko— July 4, 2014 1:43 p.m.
U-T must pay former carriers $3.18 million, will appeal
Don, Remember, they paid Burl Stiff $156,000 per year (three stories per week @ $1,000 per story). As a former paperboy for the Evening Tribune, I think paying Stiff that kind of money was almost as bad as the way they treated the newspaper carriers.— June 23, 2013 9:09 a.m.
Copley Mission Beach home sells for $3.85 million
Don, I wonder what Michael Copley thinks about this? You probably can't print his comment. I know how Helen treated Jim's children. Gekko— May 5, 2013 2:56 p.m.
U-T reports circulation gains, some dips, but...
Don, When I worked at the UT, The ABC did not count any sale toward paid circulation unless it was at least 50 percent of the full price. That was in the early 90's. I don't know if the ABC changed the price requirement to be counted toward paid circulation numbers. You may want to research it. Gekko— May 5, 2013 2:46 p.m.
Ryan Leaf in state prison
Don, I don't believe Price was recruiting. I believe he was in Florida for a golf tournament. Price ended up at Texas El Paso. How the mighty fall.— January 20, 2013 7:29 p.m.
Ryan Leaf in state prison
Don, Let's not foget that Leaf married Ray Lucia's daughter, a former Charger cheerleader. Also, it was reported in the UT that Ray Lucia hired Leaf at his firm. Neither of these two situations worked out.— January 20, 2013 10:41 a.m.
Ryan Leaf in state prison
Visduh, Leaf's coach at WSU was Mike Price. Price was hired by Alabama in December of 2002. Price was fired in May of 2003 before he coached one game. He was fired for a drinking binge at a Florida Strip club.— January 20, 2013 10:38 a.m.
David Copley owned Lugosi home
Don, how was your working relationship with David Copley and his mother Helen? In my opinion, they didn't care about any employees except those in the newsroom.— January 1, 2013 4:39 p.m.
Politico.com Knocks U-T's Republican Helpfest
Don, I noticed that Jay Posner is now the Night & Day Section Editor. I wonder how long it will be before he leaves? He must be embarrased. He was one of two or three good sportswriters they still had on the sports staff. Burwell mentioned John Sinor and Richond Barbour. Let me add some more boring writers: Michael Grant, Barry Lorge, Rueben Navarrete and Burl Stiff.— September 9, 2012 10:21 a.m.
