La Mesa's Oktoberfest becomes different animal
Making the event "authentically German" will probably worry the sponsors of any nearby Czechtoberfest celebrations. BTW, the Lake Arrowhead event isn't Oktoberfest-- it is just a summer concert series. Big Bear (ick) has always had the mountain's Oktoberfest monopoly. It is actually quite a lot of fun.— July 5, 2016 8:50 p.m.
We already drink toilet-to-tap water
The main problem with the original attempt to implement toilet-to-tap was that the powers that be were going to run a pilot program that used poorer communities as the guinea pigs, and pointedly left out richer neighborhoods. Predictably-- and 100% understandably-- this provoked a public outcry that helped to kill the initial project.— February 4, 2016 4:38 p.m.
Dirt flies at Bikeway Village
I would love a bike route over (or under) the Coronado bridge. Of course many residents of Coronado will oppose it, because there is a vocal minority there that loudly opposes anything that doesn't involve bringing back punitive bridge tolls.— January 26, 2016 5 p.m.
Old man Ward might be proud
How can someone both deepen and bury a canyon?— January 25, 2016 5:28 p.m.
Let's call this one the floppy-hatted filcher
This is just a variation of saying "she was asking for it." It is not only insulting, it is flat-out wrong. Way to blame the victim.— December 11, 2015 10:16 a.m.
Good for the gander?
We need a new acronym for this particular breed of development hypocrite. Maybe DEEMBYs (Development Everywhere Except My Back Yard)? Pro-development politicians are happy to approve almost anything anywhere, unless it negatively impacts their own interests.— October 28, 2015 10:29 a.m.
County sued for ignoring jumper's history
You can sue anyone for anything. Myths and oddities aside, winning is another matter.— October 9, 2015 8:23 p.m.
Encinitas styrofoam ban unwelcomed
Wax covered paper cups are a problem, but they decompose. Styrofoam doesn't. And the answer to the problem is not more trash cans, because a lot of people are pigs, and won't put their trash into a can no matter what. Enforcing litter laws would be nice, but no city can or will pay for adequate enforcement. Styrofoam is a big problem, and the only solution is to ban it. In spite of the biased "expert" opinions offered here, there are perfectly good alternative ways to store deli sandwiches and french fries. Mr. Amster should be a responsible business owner and put a little bit of effort into doing his part to protect his beach environment, rather than being-- or at least happily enabling-- the problem.— October 2, 2015 5:03 a.m.
Layoff czar takes over Union-Tribune
The LA Times is a shadow of the paper it was ten years ago. But over the last few months the Union Tribune was actually getting close to being worth the price of the paper it was printed on. It looks like the outlook is pretty gloomy for both papers, which is a crying shame.— September 10, 2015 8:06 p.m.
San Diegans cause Southwest Airlines plane diversion
Agreed. There aren't many places to hide in the main cabin of an aircraft in flight. There should be plenty of witnesses, and a decent understanding of what transpired won't be too far off. My understanding of the allegation from the involved passengers is that the flight attendant refused to serve them alcohol until they spoke English. That doesn't seem very likely to me, unless they were drunk and yelling at her in another language, in which case I would believe that the attendant would ask them to speak English. But it should all come out in the wash....— September 2, 2015 7:23 p.m.
