Has the Lincoln Club Lost Sway in the South Bay?
The "Club of Lincoln"- what a misnomer! Lincoln stood up for justice and a voice/representation for all. Our modern Club wants a return to a time when the privileged few determine the results for all. Oh, wait, thanks to the "Citizens United" supreme court ruling, that is what is happening right now! It is a good thing Chula Vista is such a small player the big money from super pacs won't make an appearance. Thank you AnnieJ for your comment regarding park and rec. Add libraries to that list and you have a nice chunk of what should be prioritized in our budget. I am hoping for a "changing of the guard" here in the South Bay. Out with the greed and in with the good.— June 26, 2012 10:12 a.m.
Lincoln Club Wades into Chula Vista City Council Fray
The mayor has managed to guarantee the rubber stamp she so often needs. In the South Bay politics certainly does make for strange bedfellows!— March 29, 2012 8:57 p.m.
Southwestern College Votes for Pay Increases and Campaign Donation Cap
The post by DavidD describes the problem quite clearly. I would refer readers to a Washington Monthly magazine article of Sept./Oct 2011 titled "Administrators Ate My Tuition" by Benjamin Ginsburg. He details the explosion of administrators along with their support staff while budgets for faculty are stagnant and tuition increases are an annual event. The hire of a PR professional at over $10,000 a month and raises for other officials tell me that Southwestern's reputation and image are top priorities while education takes a back seat. The only words to describe these actions are despicable and shameful.— March 17, 2012 6:44 p.m.
Victors Write Chula Vista's History? Politicians Do
Well done Mrs. luzarro! Most of the pols that you mention are so entrenched that it is doubtful that they care that there is egg on their faces. What a shame that the author was disrespected to this extent. Oh well, in a hundred more years there will be another chance to set things straight!— December 7, 2011 11:56 a.m.
Income chasm widens in San Diego
Don, You are absolutely correct that the San Diego establishment pushes big gaudy projects that do little for the long term health of our economy. The hospitality industry may create a larger quantity of jobs but they are mostly low wage and would require substantial social services (affordable housing, etc.) The environmentalists go along with this scenario because manufacturing is "dirty" and uses lots of resources. Jonnycsd is correct that education is the key to future success. A good balance of high tech, manufacturing and hospitality may be the right fit for San Diego. I just wish some of our civic leaders would look beyond downtown and not get quite so hung up on stadiums and convention centers.— October 26, 2011 2:17 p.m.
How Did We Get in This Mess at Southwestern College and Sweetwater Union?
It appears that the folks who vote to approve these bond initiatives are getting fleeced by the unholy alliance of headhunters and the school boards that hire them. These executive search firms churn their clients from district to district with no concern for their actual performance. The school boards don't seem to have any expertise on which firms might recommend the best candidate. I would ask, Is there a backdoor financial arrangement between these two entities? Do the chosen executives pay the headhunters for a successful appointment? From a taxpayer's perspective, rewarding these shady characters with precious tax dollars to go away is just tragic and adds insult to injury.— July 20, 2011 1:05 p.m.
Does Sweetwater’s Hiring of Greg Vega Constitute Conflict?
Since no one involved in this matter knows the meaning of the term "conflict of interest" it would not surprise me to learn that Mr. Vega is secretly Mr. Alevy's lawyer/advisor. This would be as incredible, unlikely or outrageous as most of the news coming to light surrounding this school district.— May 26, 2011 12:09 p.m.
Citizens Denied Attendance to Sweetwater Union High Meeting
Often it feels like the royalty and their enablers think the south bay is theirs for the taking. I have news for them; we are aware; we pay attention; we do take action and with the help of conscientious writers like Susan Luzzaro we are forcing our leaders to understand that they are no longer operating in the shadows. I believe it was only recently that Mr. Gandara and Mr. McCann left a board meeting that was not to their liking. Follow the lead of Southwestern College and kick the trash to the curb.— May 20, 2011 7:11 p.m.
Four Bakery Outlets Close in San Diego County
What most folk's aren't aware of is that the Southern California stores were run by union employees. The wages and benefits were better than you might expect. After speaking with an employee who's job was eliminated in Chula Vista, I learned that the Northern California stores (non-union) were not closed. Was this a effort to break the union? I can't be sure, but do know the "out of business" sign breaks a lot of hearts and will be costly to the Bimbo bakery's reputation.— April 3, 2011 12:53 p.m.
Bridgepoint: Bad for Students, Good for Gamblers?
It seems that the taxpayers are, once again, going to be the big losers when private enterprise manages to insert themselves as a middleman-much like health insurance companies. In an ideal world taxes collected should directly fund education for all. The escalating cost of college combined with academic underachievment and few jobs plus parents that insist their kids "do something!" lead to this type of abuse. The new regulations not taking effect until July? Plenty of time to kill reform. Nice job as usual, Don— February 2, 2011 5:27 p.m.
