Chula Vista from boom to bust to boom
joepublic, if I may be so presumptuous as to answer for Sjtorres- Consistently approving more housing (the low hanging fruit of development) has been shown to require additional funds for infrastructure and public services above and beyond the DIF (development impact fees) generated by the project. Adding population without adding jobs is not a sustainable model. At best you are lucky if residential housing breaks even and is the reason why threshold standards fall out of compliance. The problem Chula Vista has right now is that the needed improvements for traffic, fire, police and libraries requires more and more fees from development. So we need to keep construction going strong in order to pay for impacts that are already being caused by existing housing. Whew!— October 1, 2013 10:49 p.m.
Chula Vista parents protest switch to Common Core State Standards
Susan, your comment about just wanting children to love to read is spot on. I filled my home with magazines, fiction, non-fiction and even pulp journals. It doesn't matter so much what they read as long as they are reading a large sample of available literature. Reading enjoyment and comprehension will enable a person to understand and learn almost any subject and be a benefit throughout life. Also enjoyed vigilantinCV's comment about math. So very true!— September 20, 2013 5:12 p.m.
Sweetwater school district backs off on Alliant International University plan

Sweetwater underwriters reel in the big one — a grand jury indictment
February, 2014 could not get here soon enough. I agree with Oldchulares that perhaps it is best to throw them all out with apologies to Bertha, who really seems to be trying to make a better school district. In the meantime, the effort to gather signatures to get the two simple reforms of district elections and term limits for board members seems to be stuck in neutral. We need to show the County Board of Education that we want CHANGES to SUHSD politics and that business as usual can no longer be tolerated!— August 28, 2013 1:40 p.m.
Water rates hike proposed for some South County residents
Ha Ha, do you mean that $10-$15 a pound might be too steep when you add in all the cost?— August 26, 2013 9:47 a.m.
Water rates hike proposed for some South County residents
My wife and I have tried very hard to conserve water. Our lawns are brown but we grow some vegetables in the summer, so the bill goes up. We will certainly be punished for this behavior and fixed income or not, the Sweetwater Board will force more rate increases upon us. There will always be an excuse for these dictators to expand their power and kingdom while the peasants can do without. I would advise folks to watch which members act arbitrarily and vote them out!— August 24, 2013 9:37 a.m.
Alliant University leaves Sweetwater school district property in National City…sets up at Southwestern College?
Stay tuned to the next episode of "as the world of Brand turns". Heck with Filner-gate, we have our own master of disaster right here in the South Bay!— August 10, 2013 10:09 p.m.
Week in review: Sweetwater Union High School District
Whether it is recruiting kids for Alliant or recruiting kids for Grand Canyon University, why, if these plans are so brilliant is it necessary to "recruit" (with free food!) at all? Brand and his partner Hassey need only to put out a notice and students would answer the call. I think there is more to the story hiding behind the wizard's curtain . Someone standing to gain financially seems probable. The long arm of the law did not reach quite far enough in the South Bay Saga of corruption. The story should be read by all. Thanks Susan— June 30, 2013 11:47 a.m.
Sweetwater runs afoul of state Public Records Act
Please come and help consider what changes we, the people, can accomplish tomorrow (6/26) at the 4th and Orange library. Park near 4th at the back door and plan on arriving before 6:00 p.m. You can vent your frustration but also let's try to make some progress.— June 25, 2013 11:24 a.m.
