U-T Axe Was to Fall Friday. It Didn't. Newspaper May Need Employees to Slam Together Long-Delayed Pagination System
Don -- The Union-Tribune has known for at least a decade (and probably longer) that procuring photographic film was going to be increasingly difficult, if not impossible as the demand for it decreased. Photo offset suppliers and digital technology companies have been at war for 20 years, and digital has won the battle, and the Union-Tribune has known that too. So why did they delay pagination's implementation? To call it "shortsighted" is an understatement. I smell a rat (possibly several). To suggest that the U-T is about to launch an effort to cobble together a pagination system in "Rube Goldberg" fashion is an insult to Rube Goldberg.— February 3, 2009 4:29 p.m.
Copley Puts Tiny Borrego Sun Up for Sale
Many family dynasties -- whether in business or politics -- rise and fall. David Copley is not the villain here, but just the designated heir to the fortune, which is currently in flux. Since no one has figured out a way (yet) for every human being to be a billionaire, there will always be a striving among some for a greater share of what life has to offer, even when it means others will go without. The least fortunate of humankind are fighting for their lives in Darfur, the Congo, and South Asia. There will be other such struggles in the future. And so life goes on.— November 29, 2008 4:02 p.m.
Some U-T Employees See Signs That Sale May Be Imminent. Warning: There Have Been Such Signs Before
After all of the blood letting, backstabbing, and manic head chopping at the U-T over the last eight years, I have to wonder how it was decided that Todd Merriman would be the next to walk the plank. Editorial management at the U-T could write the definitive book on self-preservation in a dysfunctional organizational culture. Now that some of these folks are moonlighting second jobs and updating their resumes, I hope they are enjoying a taste (or more) of their own poisonous brew.— November 4, 2008 9:12 p.m.
