The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
The Lord of the Rings, an overblown bedtime story? Sure, vast (I have read it and The Hobbit through once, around age 40), but overblown? That, and calling this series a burden, suggests the reviewer's mind was shut tight. I count on reviewers for thoughtful analysis; I can get prejudiced responses from any teenager or codger. I expect better.— May 28, 2008 8:58 a.m.
NFL Owners Opt Out of Players' Union Contract. There Could Be No 2011 Season. Chargers Less Likely To Leave
Response to post #10: Maybe I should have said "business effect," that is, the owners and players only. I apologize for being vague.— May 21, 2008 8:34 p.m.
NFL Owners Opt Out of Players' Union Contract. There Could Be No 2011 Season. Chargers Less Likely To Leave
Response to post #1: No football for one year may not have much of an economic effect. Pro hockey lost one whole year to a lockout and seems as financially strong as ever.— May 21, 2008 9:31 a.m.
AG's Report Clearing Sanders Is a Joke, as Expected. Here's Some Advice: Follow the Money
"Behind every great fortune is a crime." -- Honore de Balzac— May 21, 2008 9:23 a.m.
Should the Padres sign Barry Bonds for the remainder of the season?
Why pick someone with a well-documented history of sowing clubhouse discontent? Ask the Giants!— May 14, 2008 9:15 a.m.
Have you ever had a personality conflict with someone?
It probably means "I pick whichever philosophy works best for a given situation." You know, realistic.— May 9, 2008 3:24 p.m.
Excessive Labor Costs Force Vallejo to Vote for Bankruptcy
Response to #2: I bet Vallejo's city council fell for the argument "We need big salaries, housing is expensive." Maybe they could do for these officials what some universities try to do for house-poor faculty: build homes, sell them with the restriction that only other faculty can buy.— May 9, 2008 9 a.m.
Excessive Labor Costs Force Vallejo to Vote for Bankruptcy
Vallejo lost the Federal dollars flowing in to the naval shipyard at Mare Island. With no replacement economic engine, and a housing downturn, this was inevitable, unions or no. An extreme case of housing not earning its keep.— May 7, 2008 12:29 p.m.
Here's an Example of SEC Nailing the Small Fry, Ignoring the Superrich
The print edition of "The Godfather" opens: "Behind every great fortune is a crime." Enough said, I think.— May 2, 2008 9:14 a.m.
Medicare broken, Social Security broken, SEC broken
In times like this I hope the Hindu notions of reincarnation is literally true. Many powerful, isolated people need to come back as sponges (no pun intended, though it it is tempting) because that is the only way they can absorb anything. Reply to Fred Williams: add ethically to economically and environmentally.— April 11, 2008 7:42 a.m.
