Prince who? At least provide a title for those of us unfamiliar with each and every old-film reference.— July 31, 2008 2:09 p.m.
Meet the Fockers
"Infinitesimally smaller" means "almost no difference," rendering the sentence meaningless. I bet you meant "infinitely smaller." Watch them big words before tossing them around so carelessly, cowboy!— July 31, 2008 11:47 a.m.
The Dark Knight clocks in
Reading the Reader reviews makes me long for Pauline Kael. Kenneth Turan is also great. Duncan, by contrast, does not care that most review readers will read his comments as a talking-down-to, and don't take kindly. If the goal is to educate, it won't happen this way.— July 29, 2008 10:32 a.m.
100 Best Movie Villians
Hans Beckert (Peter Lorre) - M (1931). I saw this film in San Francisco when the Castro ran it, roughly ten years back. The film was shot in both German and English, to allow more people to see it without locking on the subtitles and to look better than dubbing. Great performance by Lorre, and an interesting look at his persuers (parents who want justice, and underworld bosses who want the heat off).— July 28, 2008 2:02 p.m.
Gaylord Stock Tanks; Outlook for Business Group Bookings Weakens Sharply
Response to post #6: Videoconferencing is great; however, it can't match a southern tier convention center in February. I lived in east Iowa for 2.5 years and am personally aware of the strong desire to get away, if only for a week, during the worst of winter, to mentally recharge.— July 21, 2008 7:24 a.m.
San Diegans Arthur Lipper and Richard Russell on the current gloom
If greed was held down during those years, it may be related to fiscal and social policies that kept income and wealth disparities down and kept money circulating. "Tax and tax, spend and spend, elect and elect," said Harry Hopkins. It may work again, though recent excess may force allocation of income to debt reduction, a la 1993.— June 24, 2008 7:47 p.m.
San Diegans Arthur Lipper and Richard Russell on the current gloom
When Bear Stearns was bailed out, my father, the same age as John McCain and George Carlin (and capable of appreciating both), thought first how sad it was that many workers would be let go. I countered, if you work in a virtual casino, this can't come as a surprise. He understood that point.— June 23, 2008 6:22 p.m.
The gentle decline of golf in San Diego
One more data point to show the power of television: UCSD is delaying commencement by a week to accomodate the US Open at Torrey Pines.— June 10, 2008 8:09 p.m.
Casino Royale
There is casual bedding of one Bond girl: Solange Dimitrios. There are also more than James Bond, Vesper Lynd, and M-something. Were you paying attention?— May 28, 2008 2:40 p.m.
