Aaah..another day in the Hidden City! This morning around 6:15am I noticed that the string of sirens that continuously roared for over ten minutes was NOT a horrible traffic accident close by near the 78 junction, as I had initially assumed. At the same time, my girlfriend had just walked into our apartment after wrapping up a graveyard shift. "Man, there must have been a really bad accident on the 78 because those sirens have been nonstop for the last ten minutes," I told her. "Nah, they must be chasing somebody" she replied. Not more than a minute after, we heard a cacophony of sound, much more than the usual screeching of the parking lot exit gate just outside of our corner apartment unit. We sprung to our front window to see an SUV stopped just before the gate, with several screaming sheriffs deputies with their guns drawn at a suspect in the passenger seat. We witnessed the driver flee through the contorted exit gate that he attempted to drive through-which failed, but he managed to hop over the mess anyway just as we made it to our window. Yes, we were being very nosy! I was more concerned for our neighbors downstairs because a single mom with another baby on the way and her young daughter live there, and I wasn't sure if the little one was going to be up getting ready for school. In a flash-it seemed, they had the passenger detained and K-9's roaming the streets to look for the driver. At least 4-5 squad cars were lined up on the side walk just outside the gate, and 3 sheriff's SUVS were parked behind the stolen vehicle. Within 5 minutes of detaining the passenger, we overheard a deputy state that the second suspect was detained with the help of one of their K-9s. According to the narrative we overheard by another deputy, the gentlemen in the car were being pulled over as they attempted to enter the parking lot. Apparently the SUV they were driving fit the description of a vehicle previously reported stolen. In addition, we witnessed a brown evidence bag being used to collect something from within the vehicle, we assumed it was probably narcotics. As I pulled out of my parking spot, now unblocked by a sheriff SUV, what appeared to be the owner of the stolen vehicle pulled into a spot next to mine, and approached the scene to assess the damage done. And so another day in Escondido began. Props to the sheriffs for their professionalism, when guns are drawn these days it seems more of a probability that rounds will be fired, so I am thankful that we were spared would could have been a very terrible scene. And to our apartment manager, have fun repairing the gate! Oh, and the fence on the side of our building which was mangled by the tree cutters, it's about time you made yourself useful!
