So you can sample some oranges, and you can get a nibble of some good cheese, and now you can quaff a junior brewski. The only thing missing and the next logical step would be sample tokes of the fragrant weed (medicinal, of course). This is going to get interesting. City Attorney's Office vs. People of Mission Beach

Instead of worrying about a new lifeguard station, the city ought to do something about the public restrooms at this site. They have been closed for repairs for several months now with very little work being done, and stinky, unsanitary port-o-lets have been plopped down in the parking lot. That's what the public gets while the lifeguards demand a lounge and what else? Massage, manicures, and pedicures perhaps?

Bikers can take a hike

I like to bike. I ride quite a bit but when I'm on the street I don't feel a full dedicated lane is really necessary. I think the 3-ft. rule is sufficient. Cyclists just need to use some common sense. That dedicated bike lane going up Fifth Ave. from downtown to Hillcrest is a complete waste. I'm much more put out by the lack of parking than I am about not having enough room on the road for me and my bike. I went to do my weekly shopping at Trader Joe's at the Uptown Plaza and after driving around for 20 minutes looking for an available parking space, I gave up and went over to Park Blvd. to Sprouts. I see cyclists coming and going everywhere with no problem finding a place to park and lock their bikes. If there has to be a lane for bikes, 3 feet is plenty. The phrase was always, "Share the road." When did it become "This road is not big enough for both of us"?

Big-hill bikeway into Mission Valley

Too bad they couldn't make it a zig-zag pathway so one could ride up the hill without getting a heart attack. With a straight path, there definitely needs to be a bus going up (a tram would be even better). As for going down, you best have some really good brakes on that bike.

Thanks for the heads-up, Victoria. I have to tell you I grew up on your dad's movies. It was actually my parents picking the channels on our old TV, but they always went to any film that had your dad in it. Whether it was The Robe, or Samson (and Deliah?), or any one of the many he played in. He became one of my favorite actors too. I'll always treasure the memories. Bad, bad teacher sentenced

He was a substitute teacher, so I doubt he was a member of the union. Even if he were, the union would not defend this kind of behavior. That's not what unions do.

Who wants a new Mission Beach lifeguard tower again?

I don't get this. I've personally visited this lifeguard station several times and it appears to be in fine condition and perfectly adequate for what it is designed to do: allow the lifeguards to observe people in the surf and provide assistance. The fact is, this particular station has much less area of responsibility because it is alongside the Quivera Basin channel and consequently only has to keep an eye on people out front and to the right. Other stations have an entire beach to keep an eye on. If they really wanted to improve things, the first thing they should do is move this station closer to the water. Can you imagine a lifeguard at a swimming pool sitting 200 feet from the pool? This station is so far back from the high water mark, if would seem funny if it were not a potential matter of life and death. And since when do lifeguards need luxury accommodations? The job is to observe and assist. Even if someone were to break an ankle on the boardwalk, they use their first aid kit and call 911 just like anyone else. Who needs fancy digs for that?
