U-T Owner Takes Loss on Industrial Building
When the Anna Ave. site closed, Platinum decided the underground executive parking at the UT could be put to better use: storage. Many high-level gods and goddesses who proudly held these spots for years (including la Winner) were forced to hoof it in from the main lot with the lowlifes. Parking in the employee lot was a disaster for years because the UT had outgrown the plant decades earlier. Since the layoffs parking has been a dream -- maybe every cloud does have a silver lining.— January 15, 2010 9:29 a.m.

Here's A New One: U-T Owners Understate Claimed Readership
Signon was developed by some young hipsters at the height of the dot com boom. They were not UT employees. Even the name smacked of having to explain to non-users what it was ... they used to exphasize that the name was signonsandiegoDOTCOM. Signon had a lot of old Tribune folks migrate over ... they wanted to see Signon as a separate, competitive advertising and newsgathering entity of Copley, not the UT. The reporters and advertising people were paid a fraction of the what the print counterparts were making. By about 2004 Signon started generating enough revenue to cover the salaries (but not the benefits) of its workers.— November 4, 2009 2:20 p.m.
U-T to Stay in Mission Valley for Now; Vows Return to Profitability
What was interesting about Bell's initiatives (Partners, and especially 400/500 and Workout) was watching la Winner learn of the general derision non-news employees had for her and her organization. She preferred, no doubt, feigned ignorance of the snickerings that circulation, advertising, production and finance had for her efforts. The perception was that anyone else in the plant, from the janitors to the accountants, was more attuned to San Diego than any insular third floor denizen. A low-level circulation manager took Winner and Robert York to public task for hiring a marketing firm that produced the screaming, howling faces of the “How Will You Be Changed” campaign of ’01. At her upbraiding Winner looked a bit like one of the screaming faces she purchased. Incidentally, when the unions were being busted the newsroom’s bad rep played right into management’s hands. Remember, the Guild represented everyone – not just the newsies. But the cry became the Guild IS the newsroom and when has the newsroom ever cared about you?— August 17, 2009 8:34 p.m.

Back in ’99 Gene Bell was trying to do some innovative e things. For example, he got behind Workout, the General Electric “cultural intervention” designed to enhance the empowerment of employees and the openness of management to their ideas. It is designed to create a culture where “paralysis by analysis” is taboo. Workout programs are not inexpensive endeavors. Most organizations, like the UT, lacked the internal facilitation skills needed to help a group solve problems thoroughly and efficiently and followed GE’s example of using outside facilitators. Unfortunately, a half-hearted foray into workout that is allowed to wither and die probably does more to undermine the values of empowerment than never implementing workout to begin with. This is what happened at the UT, especially after some uncomplimentary items about the newsroom surfaced from the rest of the organization.— August 17, 2009 2:47 p.m.
