Ward-Faulconer parking plan to Adams Ave. and Mid City groups: drop dead
The too cozy relationship between Circulate SD and Ward's office needs to brought to light by journalism. Of course that would also mean shedding light on Gloria's relationship as well. Clearly Circulate SD is mainly a lobbying organization for developers and the building industry. But it seems they also have a distaste for community (unless its their version of what a "community" is) and regulatory oversight, essentially what we expect to see from a Republican position. Ward's, Gloria's, and Circulate's motto is essentially "Build, Baby Build" in response to the housing crisis, just as Sarah Palin's was "Drill, Baby Drill" in respond to the energy crisis. Ward and Gloria have decided it's a winning strategy (for both them and their funders) to work with Circulate to actively divide their communities over development issues, hoping the YIMBYs can dominate the dialog over the nuanced dialog many members of their community want to have over development issues. I suppose we'll see how this strategy works as we move towards the 2020 election.— July 16, 2019 8:43 p.m.
Bankers Hill volunteer attempt to save Maple Canyon stymied by city
The massive sediment problem with Maple Canyon began about 10 years ago, prior to that the water drained through the canyon to Maple Street, then the storm water pipes, and eventually to the bay, ran clear. But a single City employee authorized a volunteer to remove the plant, arundo, that was stabilizing the stream at the bottom of the canyon. This was based on a flawed City policy to remove non native plants from Open Space areas of the Parks Dept. The hardworking and well intentioned volunteer was successful and immediately the canyon began eroding away at a shocking pace. And now, according to this article another City employee is single-handedly preventing it from being saved. Sadly, the only shocking thing about all this is that none of the many people, business and entities (like the airport) are currently suing the City.— March 26, 2019 5:07 p.m.
Irwin Jacobs' loyalist Todd Gloria gets his reward
Ms Escobar Eck is a big supporter of Todd's of course. As are all the developers and developer lobbyists. Todd's focus will of course be to help his powerful supporters and try to work PR magic to make it look like he cares about the community.— March 6, 2019 5:27 p.m.
Linda Vista's Skate World, you're fine, now go away
We have to find a way to get OUR city out of the control of a handful of rich and powerful people and corporations that just see the place we live in and love as a place to make money off. Sadly both the Republican and Democratic politicians are supported by these folks, both to get in office, stay in office, and then their post office careers. The Republicans on the City Council will simply vote yes on the sale, but the Democrats will also vote for it, claiming we need a box store for housing or some such nonsense, and claiming everyone trying to save it are NIMBYs and therefore selfish and don't understand how to grow a vibrant city, or some other crap. Both parties feed at the same trough, we need to look for politicians are actually interested in working to protect and make the city better.— March 4, 2019 8 p.m.

St. Paul’s Above It All
Also a pretty good description of the building, except the roof top pool and party space was left out. I can imagine several ways to describe those important features in the context of the article. And I realize the reason this article is called "almost factual news" is that the building is actually 75 feet higher than other buildings along the park, not 50 feet.— February 8, 2019 10:38 p.m.
Cory Briggs runs for mayor of San Diego
JustWondering, is there ultimately much difference between the goals of the two local parties? The donor class (Jacobs family etc) supports both parties to make sure they get to play as they will with our city. Todd Gloria would undoubtedly be more or less Faulconer's third term, which was Saunders next term etc. They essentially hire the same people and pander to the same lobbyists and their clients. They throw a few socially liberal tidbits to give the impression they are doing something that matters, but ultimately they are there to keep the status quo for the folks who really run the city. Jumping in the race when he did and why he did indicates the depth of Cory's understanding of what it means for the Democrats and Republicans to unite in giving away the city to the developers, both using the cynical developer tool of YIMBYism. Cory is the ultimate outsider who deeply sees how the inside works. Exciting to have him in the race!— January 30, 2019 8:04 p.m.
Bankers Hill opens umbrellas to protest 'shady' project
It will be interesting to see what our City Council does regarding this project on Monday. As designed, the project is in clear violation of many aspects of the Uptown Community Plan that was updated in 2016, and contains many developer friendly components. But apparently not "friendly" enough for Greystar who seems to feel its bare minimum inclusion of affordable units should allow it to ignore the Community Plan almost entirely. Hopefully the City Council will ask Greystar and St Paul's to make some modifications and go back to Uptown Planners for approval. While housing matters, so do our communities and our democratic process.— January 22, 2019 9:29 p.m.
Sunset Cliffs Not So Natural Park
Restoring native plants in our open space is a great idea. But its a lot of work, and therefore expensive to do. So the entire problem here is simply that the City pays people to come up with these ideas, but doen't provide the resources to realize them. They fund enough money to make the plan work on paper, but in reality its much harder to realize. The use of Round Up is an inexpensive quick fix, what is really needed in more labor, vigilance and care. And Round Up in this location (on the ocean) is a terrible idea.— January 16, 2019 7:48 a.m.
Apartments for poor come to 13th and Broadway
While I don't know the specifics of this project, I strongly support adding affordable housing developments to all areas of the city, which definitely includes Downtown and Uptown neighborhoods. Diversity of all kinds is the strength of our city. Also, income level doesn't determine ones preference for neighborhood types, we should be building center city apartment towers and town homes in less dense neighborhoods. Also, high rises in downtown make lots of sense as the future residents for the most part won't have cars, so the proximity to public transportation matters. I live in Bankers Hill and would welcome a project like this in my neighborhood. I feel adding the this type of housing to the luxury buildings being built will help keep the economically diverse neighborhood I love from continuing to evolve into an affluent ghetto.— December 9, 2018 8:46 a.m.
