Big Tobacco Spends Big On Ads Against Tobacco Tax
'Dr' Porter should be struck off the medical register for failing to honour the Hippocratic Oath. If she were true to her profession, she would seek to account for the origins of tobacco-related illness and death (the people named at the bottom of the campaign page). Instead, she tries to deceive with an emphasis on treatment options. The intended effect is that the expression dating from the time of Hippocrates ('an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure') is paid lip service. The Hippocratic oath, which speaks of "First do no harm' contrasts with 'Dr' Porters' stance. It is for this reason she should be struck off. This campaign is labelled 'Californians against out of control spending/taxing'. Why on earth is the tax on cigarettes not greater? As a medical professional presumably in touch with the effects of smoking ("I'm against smoking"), she might account for the damage caused. Her words don't reveal that level of professionalism, however. The effects themselves resemble an out of control taxation, and given the documented harm, the purchase of tobacco is out of control spending. For this group to genuinely live up to its' name, they would support Prop 29.— April 26, 2012 2:21 p.m.
