Free Outdoor Movies All Summer at Liberty Station
Are you being sarcastic when you call Citizen Kane the greatest movie of all time? Isn't that just something people like to say in order to sound in-the-know? It's a good movie, maybe great. But THE greatest?— June 23, 2011 11:29 a.m.
Roundup: The Roar
The sad thing about this BWESAR* is that it's a complete ripoff of that Lord of the Rings cave troll. It's bad enough to resort of BWESAR tactics, it's really bad when you can't come up with your own BWESAR. *BWESAR = Beast Who Enters Scene and Roars— May 19, 2011 11:16 a.m.
Imperial March
Just listened to the Holst. Williams IS a bit of a rip off artist, isn't he?— May 10, 2011 11:22 a.m.
Imperial March
Is it Star Wars day down at the Reader? First Matthew Lickona's post about the original Star Wars trailer looking lame without John William's music, then this post about Williams. Who is conducting in the YouTube of the Imperial March? Is it me, or is it a good deal faster than it was in the Empire Strikes Back?— May 10, 2011 11:17 a.m.
Diana Death: The Female Johnny Thunders
Easy on the eyes, isn't she?— May 9, 2011 3:38 p.m.
Thor Minimalist Movie Poster: Who Did It Better?
I agree with Altius... but only to a point. Youssef's kill Bill is a bit derivative, yes. But I find it hard NOT to look at. It's engaging to the mind -- why only 5 footprints? Is Bill being tracked? What's behind all that darkness? Are those bloody footprints? The first Thor effort, the one with the big white hammer, truly is dung. The god of thunder can't be happy about that. Might explain the s**tty weather we're having today. The Moss poster is, like Youssef's not terribly original, in terms of its look. But, again like Youssef's, I couldn't stop looking at it. There's so much going on in those little panels. Why is one dude wearing a suit? What do the letter S and M at the base of the handle mean? What's going on in the top right corner. However, the background color is worse than uninteresting, it's plain ugly. And the type at the top is too small and too boring.— May 9, 2011 3:02 p.m.
Tequila for the masses at UCSD tomorrow
Now if only they could make Tequila that didn't taste like Tijuana gutter water.— May 9, 2011 2:48 p.m.
Boring
"I wonder what would happen if audiences were invited to participate with classical music the way they do with rock 'n' roll." Have you ever watched one of those Andre Rieu specials on PBS? That's exactly what they do. The crowd sings, sways, and dances in the aisles. And it's all classical music -- well, 75% classical, 25% folk music. But it's all full orchestra. And the shows are huge events which sell out. I'm sure Rieu makes purists break out in hives, but I think he's a genius. At the very least, there's a place for that kind of populism in classical music.— April 20, 2011 10:22 a.m.
One Hit Wonders
I consider Ravel to be something of a one-hit wonder. I'm speaking of his Bolero, or course. It was made famous in the movie "10" as Bo Derek's favorite doin'-it music. What was that? 1980 or so? I should say it was made famous all over again. It was a big hit when it premiered at Paris in 1928, and an even bigger hit after its New York premiere in 1929. That New York debut was under the baton of Toscanini who later famously battled with Ravel himself over the tempo of the piece. (Ravel thought Toscanini's version was too fast.) The controversy, it seems, made the piece even more popular.— February 23, 2011 2:26 p.m.
Color-blind
Color-Scared would have been a better title for this story. I'm not a psychologist... but it seems Kai is simply running from her blackness, or pretending it doesn't exist.— February 21, 2011 9:47 a.m.
