Is San Diego bait for a nuclear attack?

During the Bush administration it was quite fashionable for many Americans to disregard or think the opposite of whatever the president's office said. If they said to fear a nuke on American soil, it was easy for many to NOT fear a nuke. No matter who says what though, it would be hard to argue that San Diego is not a target. Also, there are already so many nuclear weapons that already exist, stopping any new nations from joining the nuclear club doesn't even come close to ending the possibility. There are a few things you could do to survive, depending on where you were if and when it happens, but strangely there is very little public awareness or public service announcements (PSA) about this. It is likely that the size of any nuke that would go off wouldn't be of the magnitude that wipes out a city completely, so there could be many survivors. You have 10-15 minutes to get at least a mile away from the actual blast site before lethal radiation falls. Move perpendicular to the wind to avoid the fallout. The first few days are the most dangerous in terms of fallout, so if you cant get out of the city seek shelter. As there are not that many basements in San Diego, underground parking structures may be good shelters - the deeper the better. Also, during a blast don't look at the flash because you could go blind and keep your mouth open so your ear drums don't burst. Or you could just hang out at the Greek Sombrero!

There Goes the Neighborhood (North Park)

From what I can tell the event is not just some rosy appraisal of North Park and where its going. The first event (two years ago) was focused on gentrification - although seemingly not automatically assuming aspects as either good or bad. Also, it is assumed that attendees are active members of the community. The event seems to be focused on trying to understand the deeper issues of how and why neighborhoods change, down to the structure of information flow in society. In addition, if the humans involved (architects, business owners, artists, academics, citizens, etc.) actually come into contact with each other face to face, in a stranger forum than the many meetings that have taken place, perhaps something would change - dare I saw for the better. In conversations with the organizers, the displacement of artists came up. The idea that artists *may* play a role in gentrification is interesting, regarding the idea that artists might help raise the property value of a given neighborhood, and then not afford to live there as a result.

I did actually intend to put it where I did, as a very liberal interpretation of what 'breaking news' is. Considering it is about an event that is occurring the same day this story was posted (it actually just started), it is obviously not that breaking in terms of time. The immediacy is in the decision making of the reader - can this be thought of as a breaking story? Is the fact that we are all going to die motivating enough to justify any potentially life-enhancing event/story as important enough to qualify as breaking news. I know, a very long stretch, and within the framework of The Reader's blog section, stories are categorized in a very clear way. As Jay stated it is the staff bloggers that decide where blogs go, and in the future I will tame my liberal categorizing. It was more of a little experiment. If I harmed anybody by posting Record Release Show (Tonight) - Beaters in the News Ticker section I sincerely apologize.
