Is self-regulation working at Torrey Pines Gliderport?
To answer the question: "Is self-regulation working at Torrey Pines Gliderport?" No. Neither of the deceased pilots had the ratings to fly at Torrey, so they both should have been under instructor supervision. Who were the instructors? Who issued the ratings? How crowded was the ridge? Oh that's right, the Torrey business writes the report. Do you think they'll find themselves with any fault? The best estimates are that they bring in close to $2 million every year (no one will say for sure). They don't pay the City a dime of rent on a lease that expired in 2008 (yes, that's not a typo). Earlier this year the City budget was going to lay off 4 park rangers for a total savings of $325k per year. Rather than laying off good park rangers, why not station them to oversee the Gliderport and pay their salaries from the City's rightful share of that income? The answer is corruption. I brought that suggestion to the City Council and miraculously the City found money to keep the 4 park rangers ... without asking a penny from the business. Funny how that worked out. Corruption. Follow the money. Barbara Bry and Kevin Faulconer and Mara Elliot have all known about this and looked the other way for their entire terms. Now two more are dead.— July 17, 2019 2:50 p.m.
Bob Kuczewski – arrested at Torrey Pines glider port again
Short version: Sweetheart lease deal (free) between former San Diego Police Officer David Jebb and the City of San Diego expired in August of 2008. But Jebb wanted to "sell" the business and make a big profit. His expired lease would have been worthless if the City put it up for competitive bid back in 2008. But Sanders was Mayor and somehow the lease was never put up for bid (it's been almost 7 additional years now). I've spoken out about the abuses at the Gliderport and the expired lease. The reward for whistle blowers in San Diego is jail. No charges were ever filed. Spend a night in jail, no charges are filed - no problem, right? That's what's been happening. That Gliderport belongs to the people of San Diego, and yet we're being bullied by an abusive concessionaire on our own property. The most important thing that the story left out was our goal of creating a Torrey Pines City Park Advisory Board so the users of the park (hang glider pilots, paraglider pilots, RC pilots, and sailplane pilots) can have some input as to how the park is operated and get a fair review of safety violations and abuses. That's what we need, and that's what David Jebb, Gabriel Jebb, and Robin Marien have been resisting for years. Sherri Lightner has been refusing to meet with citizens in her district about the Gliderport for her entire term in office. There's plenty of corruption to go around.
