First realize we have a housing crisis in this area, housing costs and rents are outrageous, if based on income vs. expenses we rival New York and or Vancouver. Which brings me to the conversations I had over the weekend , one couple that live in Brooklyn at times between roommates airbnb'd an extra room, this allowed them to start their own business and stay where they wanted to live. When the airbnb host lives onsite it is very different than an absentee host. The second couple owned a Condo in Vancouver as a vacation site, visiting a few weeks a year, well Vancouver added a tax for absentee residents of $10000/ year and they decided to sell and use other accommodations next time they visit, freeing up a condo for a full time resident since Vancouver has the same issues with housing we have. Maybe its time to look at alternatives outside the simple boxes our elected officials and NIMBYs seem stuck in. BBQ

Supply and demand it’s as simple as this. As long as the demand keeps on growing. People will find ways, legal or not, to meet it. Greed, not good neighbors, is our culture’s newest goal.

We have a housing crisis. There have been many solutions offered up through the last decades but there is always a reason more low income housing can't be built. It is great for property owners who routinely fight any low income projects like an existential threat. The zoning laws appear to be unenforced depending on who gets elected City Attorney. We need more units. The high rents are contributing to the homeless crisis which just created an epidemic. How much worse does it need to get before we actually do something?

Bizarre: he's willing to walk away from day-to-day involvement in what would be his biggest and most memorable project in exchange for being ambassador to the . . . Bahamas? Boy, that's a prestige appointment, right up there with being ambassador to Monaco (if there's such a position), or Lichtenstein, or maybe Lower Slobbovia! We can only take away from this the idea that he's so obsessed with being an ambassador--never mind to what country--that's he's eager to abandon his business. Are these the actions of a sane man? It's hard to imagine that, but then he's done enough things in recent years to make anyone wonder about his real sanity. Dougo is in his dotage methinks.

Matt Potter: Once again your anti-union anti-employee bias is showing. If employee wish to belong to a union and negotiate with an employer for wages, hours and working conditions there is two ways of doing it. One is an election overseen by the NLRB or by a mutual agreement between the employer and the union to have a card check. If the employees win the election or show that there are enough employee wanting a contract with their employer through a card check then the union is certified as the employees representative. Once that is done the employees meet with the union reps and TELL the union what they want in a contract with the employer. The employer and the union negotiate an agreement which then is presented to the employees and the employees then vote whether to accept the contract or not. It is sad that allowing "big labor into the non-union hostelry" is going against GOP values. The hotel/restaurant/entertainment/retail industry has prospered on the backs of low wage low/no benefits employees who have had no voice in the workplace. What is wrong with employees having a contract with their employers?
