Dr Diane Heaton Schmitt, 60, passed away on Dec. 7, 2016 at her home in Coronado. Born and raised in Princeton, Il, Diane had spent the last two decades of her life living in Southern California. Diane had numerous academic accomplishments, holding a BES in Educational and Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri, an MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Fuller Theological Seminary, an MEd in Counseling Psychology and Guidance from Point Loma Nazarene University, and a DMin in Pastoral Care and Counseling from Claremont School of Theology. Throughout her career, she worked primarily as a Marriage and Family Therapist and spiritual care provider, in various positions at nonprofit organizations and in private practice. Her passion for her work and her great skill in helping others will be remembered by her colleagues and family alike. Diane is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Hope and Matthew Cowan; her mother Janice Heaton; her three sisters, Susan Heaton, Karen Heaton, and Beth Heaton; and four nephews and a niece. Diane is also survived by her beloved dog Harmony. Diane was preceded in death by her father, Richard Heaton, her uncle H. Clifford Heaton, and her grandparents, Howard and Dorothy Heaton. Diane was an avid explorer of the world and was always seeking new adventures and opportunities. She loved to travel and her adventures included trips around the world. Some of her favorite places were Antigua, England, India, Israel, and France, though those represent only a fraction of the places her travels took her. Diane’s ashes will be scattered privately at several of her favorite places around the world. Remembrance services will be held in Princeton, Il, and Coronado early in 2017.
