San Diego lifeguards to the rescue
The Ocean Beach Historical Society and author Michael Martino take a look at the early years of lifesaving along San Diego’s beaches and the formation of the San Diego Lifeguard Service. Martino worked many years as a lifeguard for California’s State Park System and became chief lifeguard of the California State Parks. Martino’s book, HELP! San Diego Lifeguards to the Rescue, was published last year.

Escape The Con: The Villain’s Tail
Take a break from Comic Con and retreat into nature. Discover rattlesnakes, mountain lions, and coyotes. Chances are, you or someone you know has had an encounter with one of these animals, or has a scary story to tell that they swear is true. This one-hour program will show attendees how to coexist safely, all with a comic theme. There will be an animal presentation and an easy hike into the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge.

The Over-the-Line Tournament originated in Mission Beach, and now draws teams from all over the world. The sport has grown dramatically from a few friends playing ball in the sand to an annual two-weekend tournament. Over 1000 teams will gather with their bats, balls, and most creative team names. The first three game days will conclude Sunday afternoon with the Men’s Open Championship.

Ben Vereen At Martinis Above Fourth
Ben Vereen earned respect as an actor in Roots, but the 72-year-old stage vet will always be best known as the song and dance man from Pippin, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Hair. In addition to showtune standards, his two-night stand in Hillcrest will preview new material being developed for an upcoming one-man Broadway show written by Joe Calarco, with music composed by Stephen Schwartz.
