Bodie: Good Times and Bad

Will Furman, the fine art photographer behind Bodie: Good Times and Bad, discusses history of Bodie State Historic Park and the “inside-out reflections” photography technique used in book. Learn the history of Bodie, northeast of Yosemite National Park. The town had two sides: on one hand, stalked by shootists in black swallow-tailed coats, on the other, full of hard working pioneers who dressed their little girls in starched white frocks and met adversity with charity. Mark Twain mused that, in Bodie, virtue versus vice made for exciting times.

Escondido Tamale Festival

Sample traditional, Oaxacan, banana-wrapped, vegetarian, dulce, and smoked BBQ tamales. Contest for best tamale, Chihuahua dog costume contest; also amateur salsa dance competitions. Live entertainment includes mariachis, folklorico, Aztec dancers, and free concert by Las Cafeteras and Dueto Dos Rosas. Craft vendors, beer and wine garden, face painting, henna tattoo artists, playground, and kids fun zone.

Science professor Ever Montgomery has Asperger’s syndrome, which inhibits him socially. He is going to an awards dinner but needs to know how to dance in order to survive the event. So he offers to pay his neighbor, Senga Quinn, a professional dancer, to teach him. But she’s hobbled by an injury and fears she may never dance again.

Fall back in time to an 1880s street faire: pan for gold using prospectors, observe blacksmiths and quilt makers, churn butter, dip candles, ride ponies, and take time-period portrait using wild west attire and props. Spaghetti, pie, and ice cream eating contests. Free quesadillas, popcorn, hotdogs, cotton candy, root beer floats, and ice cream for kids. Cultural booths will display nationalities of San Diego.

Back in town for first time in over two years, The Menzingers disprove the notion that any punk band formed after 2000 is just a copy of a copy of a copy. Inspired by first wave of East Coast punk and once known as Bob and the Sagets, the Scranton Pennsylvania quartet is touring in support of After the Party. It’s as blistering a release as anything this side of the Angry Samoans and the Circle Jerks. The bill includes Tiny Moving Parts and local lady rockers Daddy Issues.
