Scooter Chronicles Release Party

  • Thursday, July 19, 2018, 6 p.m.
  • Vespa Motorsport, 3955 Pacific Highway, San Diego
The Scooter Chronicles

The Scooter Chronicles is set during the local mod revival of the mid-1980s, spinning the tale of how one teen’s quest to buy a Vespa turned into a nightmare. It’s written by Shahriar Fouladi, with rare photos of the local mod scene and an essay from Shambles frontman Bart Mendoza. Legendary San Diego bands name-checked in the book include the Crawdaddys, the Odds, and Tell Tale Hearts. The release party takes place at local scooter central, Vespa Motorsport on Pacific Highway, where Mendoza’s reunited 1980s mod band Manual Scan will perform.

Meet and greets feature authors V.E. Schwab, R.A. Salvatore, and Cory Doctorow, pluds Talkin’ Toons host Rob Paulsen with guests Maurice LaMarche and Randy Rogel.

Jennifer G. Spencer: The Artist Portrait Project

San Diego Artist Portraits

Jennifer Spencer has photographed 50 well-known artists: San Diego legends like Cindy Zimmerman, Jim Hubble, Anne Mudge, and Philipp Scholz Rittermann. Spencer shares her notes from photography sessions, notes that reveal the unique style, vulnerability, and quirkiness of each artist.

Disney’s Newsies

In 1899, William Randloph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer paid their delivery boys practically zip. Most of them came from poor immigrant families and were, in effect, a child labor force. On July 18, 1899, led by Kid Blink, newsies turned over a distribution wagon for the New York Journal, then went on strike for two weeks. They even stopped traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. The strikers won, and received more money for their work.

When: Wednesdays through Sundays, 8 pm, through August 4

Where: Moonlight Amphitheatre, 1250 Vale Terrace Drive, Vista. moonlightstage.com
