A basketball injury sidelined Bruin for a while.

Klezmer musicologist Yale Strom has a new album with his Broken Consort, Shimmering Lights, featuring traditional Yiddish, Ladino, and Hebrew Khanike songs inspired by the sounds of Morocco, Poland, Spain, and elsewhere. "We have a special Winter Shminter concert at the San Diego Rep Theatre December 21," says Strom, "with Fred Benedetti, Mark Dresser, and Elizabeth Schwartz. Folk music from pagan and beyond!"

Mount Pleasant is re-releasing their debut EP at the Soda Bar on December 11, with extras such as a remix of “Trees” by Keith Milgaten (aka Keith Sweaty) and Lorna Dune. The bill includes Beck guitarist Cecilia Della Peruti and her band Gothic Tropic, on the road promoting their newest, Fast or Feast.

Milgaten also worked on the newest release from Bruin, back in the recording studio after a forced hiatus caused by their drummer being injured in a basketball accident. “The nine tracks that we worked on over the year that I flew out to Portland to finish with Keith Milgaten are being mastered right now,” says Dominic Fawcett. “One of the singles is up on Spotify and Apple music and Bandcamp, it’s called ‘It’s Not You, It’s We,’ which is also the name of the EP. We’re gonna slow release it as a four-track EP on cassette tapes with a download card. The other tracks, we’re saving to be on split seven-inches with our friends Well Well Well and another band called Nicely.”

Former Mick Jagger guitarist Stevie Salas is in Australia producing a new album with Yothu Yindi, a group with Aboriginal and balanda (non-Aboriginal) members. Salas also has a new band featuring frequent Rolling Stones collaborator Bernard Fowler, bassist Doug Wimbish (Living Colour), and drummer Brian Tichy (Ozzy Osbourne, Billy Idol).

“I’m completing my three-song White Album tribute before end of the year,” says former Puppies singer-guitarist Richard Filaccio. “It coincides with new remixed Beatles release.” He recently issued his second single after a long break from the music biz. “I’ve played a few solo gigs down in San Diego over the past couple years, getting back on stage after decades away.” He credits his return in part to Jimmy Fallon spotlighting the Puppies on a Tonight Show Do Not Play segment that featured their song “Cat Food.” “The Fallon thing was such an out of the blue thing, we all loved it. And he was kind to us, where he usually makes fun of these one offs. And having the Roots do a piece of it was thrilling.”
