Aspiring Babe Ruths take heed, Padres Baseball Camps will be running weekly from June 18 through August 10, (except the week of July 4th) at locations around San Diego, from Poway to Chula Vista La Jolla to Carlsbad. From 9 am until 3 pm, little sluggers ages 5 through 12 can hone their bat and glove skills. Individualized instruction, as well as highlights of the week such as the Silver Spikes Competitions, the Home Run Derby, the Gold Glove Competition and the Division-Wide All-Star game make this an action-packed week. All campers will receive a SD Padres Baseball Camp uniform, and two tickets for a reunion at a Padres game. This camp benefits The Padres Foundation. Bring a glove, lunch, and water bottle. $525 per camper.

John Olive Basketball Camp

Former NBA player and former head coach of Loyola Marymount, John Olive, has been teaching basketball for 30 years and runs the John Olive Basketball Camp. Located at the gymnasium at Torrey Pines High School, the coed camp has an 8-to-1 ratio of players to coach and is features instruction on ball handling, shooting, athletic development, character development, and league games. Morning sessions, from 8 am until noon, are for the 6 to 12 age group. Afternoon sessions run from 1 until 5 pm and are for the 13 to 17-year-old campers. Basketballs will be provided, but bring snacks and drinks and be prepared for a good workout. Registration is $220 for the 6-12 group, $230 for the 13-17 group.

Nike Junior Golf Camp

This camp is designed for boys and girls age 10-17 who have some prior golfing experience. This four-day camp runs Monday-Thursday from 12:30 pm until sunset. Golf professional Michael Major and staff will give daily instruction. Campers start day with a 2½-hour skills clinic, which covers putting, pitching, chipping, bunker play, and full swing. There will be one instructor for every two foursomes. Campers will enjoy daily course play with staff on the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course, and early dinner at the Lodge at Torrey Pines and golf with the staff until dark is included in the fee. Also included: a camper amenity package that provides a Nike hat, drawstring bag, one dozen SRIXON golf balls, camp workbook, and graduation certificate. Fee: city of San Diego residents $595, visitors (including greater San Diego County residents) $695. June 18-August 9.

San Diego Fencing Center

This five-day beginner’s fencing camp will teach kids age 7-12 the basics of the Olympic sport of fencing. Sessions run two hours Monday-Friday from 10 am to noon, and feature fun drills, games, and challenges. Coaches start with stretching, then move into coordination drills in which kids are shown such techniques as how to parry. Fencing is not only excellent physical exercise; it also teaches kids to make complex decisions, analyze problems, and think quickly. Campers need to wear athletic shoes, sports shorts, and a T-shirt, and bring a water bottle. All fencing equipment is provided. Campers will receive masks and plastic foils, and the camp will culminate with a fun in-house tournament. June 18th-July 27. Fee: $120. Six camp sessions offered.

Surf Diva

Ocean and beach awareness as well as surfing are included in this camp for boys and girls age 5-17. Camp takes place at La Jolla Shores, a sandy-bottom beach protected from summer southern swells by the peninsula at La Jolla. With an instructor-student ratio of 1:4, kids are sure to get plenty of attention on the ocean. First-time surfers will get extra coaching and experienced surfers can get a new perspective from an expert eye. Older campers will get extra water time and advanced coaching. Camp rate includes a rash guard and board rental. Wetsuit rental not included. Wetsuits available for additional $5 a day. Half-day camp runs three hours and can be attended morning, midmorning, or afternoon. Full-day camp runs from 9 am to 4:30 pm. Fee: half-day $360, full day $595. Price for both camps includes the city of San Diego’s ten percent cent surcharge. June 4th-August 31.
