Alleged sex, lies, and genital moles

Union boss Mickey Kasparian responds to deposition specifics

A former union employee who says her boss Mickey Kasparian forced her into a sexual relationship has given testimony that raises doubts as to Kasparian's denial of the relationship.

In December of last year, Isabel Vasquez sued Kasparian, president of the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 135, for sexual harassment. She says the union boss threatened her job if she didn't have sex with him shortly after she was hired in 2001.

In the years that followed, Vasquez claims that Kasparian demanded oral sex in his office, his car, and sex in hotel rooms that were paid for with union funds.

In media reports as well as recent testimony, Kasparian has denied any such relationship ever occurred.

In May of this year, after another employee came forward with allegations that Kasparian fired her over politics, Kasparian left his position as head of the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council to form a new labor union, the San Diego Working Families Council.

Kasparian continues to serve as president for the United Food and Commercial Union Workers union.

But court documents show that Vasquez has intimate details that only she would know if the accusations that the two were involved sexually was true.

In her deposition Vasquez described two large moles on Kasparian's genitals.

In late August Kasparian gave his own deposition, during which he continued to deny that he and Vasquez were intimate. Kasparian testified that he had told a former employee and Vasquez’s current fiance, Terry Hunt, about the moles.

"Several years ago I had a cancer scare," Kasparian testified. "I was — that I developed this mole, describing it very vividly as Ms. Vasquez described it. And I made mention of that to [Hunt] and another person in the union representatives area and that I was scared that I thought it was cancer. And I was going to go to the doctor to see what the status of that was."

Also during Kasparian's deposition, the union boss was asked about another sexual harassment complaint from an employee who worked alongside Vasquez. According to the testimony, the woman said Kasparian asked to have sex with the woman while at lunch in 2011. The woman told her husband. Some time later the woman's husband head-butted Kasparian in the nose.

"And did he hit you with his head, on your nose, because he claimed that you propositioned his wife for sex?" Asked Vasquez’s attorney Manuel Corrales.

"Absolutely not," answered Kasparian.

"What was your understanding as to why he hit you with his head on your nose?"

"Zero understanding," said Kasparian.

"So it was just a surprise to you?"

"Absolutely. [One hundred] percent a surprise."

Kasparian declined to comment for this article. Attorney Dan Gilleon, who represents Vasquez, also declined to comment.

The case will move forward in civil court.
