The results are in for the 2017 San Diego International Beer Competition, and as usual the home team just wanted these medals more. Of 168 medals handed out, 70 of them went to local breweries (and cideries). With 57 style categories in competition, San Diego earned 24 golds and 22 silvers — basically, 42 percent of all the medals stayed here in San Diego, a slight improvement over last year.

For the third year in a row, AleSmith earned the overall Champion Brewery distinction. It did so by claiming two golds and a silver, all in strong beer categories.

Also winning two gold medals this year were Bagby Beer and Duck Foot Brewing.

Rip Current Brewing and new entry Eppig Brewing led the field of multiple-medal winners, winning four apiece, including one each gold and silver.

The Pizza Port brand boasts a hefty haul of its own — its Carlsbad brewpub won gold and two silvers, while its Ocean Beach location earned gold and bronze and Bressi Ranch won a silver. Lost Abbey added three of its own, including two silver. Rounding out the three-medal tier, South Park Brewing claimed three medals, one of them silver.

Double-medal winners include Karl Strauss Brewing and Mason Ale Works, each with gold and silver. Council Brewing's Magic Factory label won gold and bronze medals, as did Mike Hess Brewing. Coronado Brewing won silver and bronze.

Joining Eppig and Mason Ale Works in the long list of new breweries to score accolades in this competition are Burgeon Beer, North Park Beer Co., and Resident Brewing, each with a single gold medal. Burning Beard Brewing claimed silver and bronze in pale-ale categories; while Pure Project and Second Chance Brewing each got silver and Culver Beer, bronze.

Finest Made Ales, the brewery formerly known as Butcher's, scored a gold medal, while the returning Indian Joe Brewing nabbed a bronze.

Meanwhile, San Diego breweries swept eight categories: brett and other sour beers, pilsners, American red ales, bitters, German ales, German weiss beers, bold stouts, and imperial stouts. Additionally, San Diego cideries took all medals in the specialty cider category: newly opened Newtopia Cyder won gold and bronze, while Turquoise Barn Cider took silver.
