Lotus and El Ten Eleven, Metalachi, Sweet and Tender Hooligans

...plus the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this weekend

Heavy metal con queso: Metalachi will be serving it up at Casbah Friday night!

Experimental Philly hits Lotus will bring their "jamtronica" brand of dance rock to Belly Up on Thursday.

Thursday 2
The Philly-based “jamtronica” band Lotus last year released their most stripped set yet in Eat the Light, the album’s name and rhythmic dance vibe a nod to new-wave icons the Talking Heads’ Remain in Light. Lotus can pull electro-rockers to the dance floor like Orb and Aphex Twin or ride a chillwave vibe à la Trans Am and Tortoise, all of which the road dogs will deliver when they play to a packed Belly Up on Thursday night after everyone’s favorite looping L.A. duo El Ten Eleven. The El Tens are touring in support of their latest release, Fast Forward, an album that finds Dunn (bass) and Fogarty (drums) vamping Disintegration-era Cure.... Best of the rest Thursday night: the Bassics, Gloomsday, and Bad Kids fill an indie-eclectic bill at the Casbah, doling healthy dollops of mod-rock, doom-pop, and surf-punk, respectively...Soda Bar stages Bozeman, Montana’s “outer bluegrass” band the Kitchen Dwellers after likeminded Coloradans Gipsy Moon...while right down the street at the Hideout you’ll find darktronica bands Solve, Hexa, and Wire Spine.

Local soul-rock singer Birdy Bardot (New Kinetics, Rosalyns) brings her solo show to Soda Bar Friday night!

Friday 3
From Hollyweird via Juarez, the six cats in Metalachi claim to be the world’s first heavy-metal mariachi band. “What began as an innocent night of snorting horse tranquilizers in a hotel room with seven members of the village jai alai team went on to produce the greatest metal band to ever live.” And you won’t argue when you hear their spicy takes on Guns ’N Roses, Zeppelin, Ozzy, and Judas Priest. Metalachi plays Casbah on Friday after local supergroup Spitfire Torpedo (feat. members of Manual Scan, the Shambles, Creedle, and the Dragons).... Else: the multitalented, multiband “garage-psych and California soul” singer Birdy Bardot (New Kinetics, Rosalyns) will headline sets at Soda Bar after Imagery Machine and Strawberry Moons...Sacri Monti, Petyr, and Volcano will fill a loud-ass local bill at Til-Two...Tower Bar hosts a Hip-Hop vs. Punk event under the spire. Contenders include Secret Fun Club, Stuntdouble & Tenshun, Parker Meridien, and Cruz Radical, who is featured in this week’s “Big wall realities” Blurt talking Trump and Tijuana...L.A. glam-metal band Rough Cutt’s at Brick by Brick...while emo kingpin Chris Carrabba and his Dashboard Confessional play the House of Blues behind this year’s Covered and Taped EP, which finds the four-piece covering pop acts such as the 1975 and Justin Bieber.

Smiths tribute Sweet and Tender Hooligans takes the Observatory stage on Saturday.

Saturday 4
SaturDAY there will be a club full of Vinyl Junkies crate flipping and cocktail sipping at Casbah’s monthly record swap...and then SaturNIGHT, the Middletown mainstay will host Rise Up Get Down, a social, political, record-listening party that may help sort through these cray times. Speakers include councilmembers Georgette Gomez and Chris Ward as well as the advocacy director of United We Dream, Greisa Martinez. DJs include Records with Roger, Mr. Mazee, DJ Claire, and Milky Wayne, and proceeds will benefit Raise Progress, “Advancing change, uplifting communities, promoting hope”.... Uptown Saturday night: Sweet and Tender Hooligans will bring their Smiths tribute to Observatory North Park. The Hooligans were formed in 1992 by lead singer Jose “the Mexican Morrissey” Maldonado, who portrayed Moz in the film My Life with Morrissey. The man himself once acknowledged the band at a show at the Wiltern by announcing to his audience, “Hello, we are the Sweet and Tender Hooligans!” L.A.’s modern cumbia collective El Conjunto Nueva Ola opens that show...while alt-country SDMA winner Dead Feather Moon headlines sets at Soda Bar after Oh Spirit! and Grim Slippers...and Russian Tremors hit the Tower Bar with “shattered-garage-prog-punk soundscapes for systematic collapse” after Bosswitch and Rebels & Traitors.
