Dock Totals Dec 10 – Dec 16: 1,128 anglers aboard 60 boats out of San Diego landings this past week caught 893 bluefin tuna, 4 yellowfin tuna, 567 yellowtail, 6 calico bass, 19 sand bass, 3,321 rockfish, 173 lingcod, 12 bonito, 250 whitefish, 230 sheephead, 28 sanddab, 7 bocaccio, 1 mako shark, 1 halibut, 1 sargo, and 13 spiny lobster.

Saltwater: If wanting to change up the traditional holiday meals or just add a sashimi side, folks will have fresh bluefin tuna and yellowtail available for Christmas if they want to go out and catch one or two. Limits of tuna have been common still for the 1.5 day boats while some of the fleet did very good on yellowtail — the catch total of the latter quadrupled over the previous week.

They are two totally different meats, one being a jack and the other a tuna; yellowtail is a firm white meat that can be grilled, steamed, baked and even fried – or eaten uncooked as hamachi (sashimi-style), or in lime juice as ceviche. Bluefin tuna can also be prepared many different ways, but favorites are lightly smoked, seared as is common with yellowfin, or as sashimi. With a little wasabi and ginger on the side with the tuna, or greens and red bell peppers to complement the yellowtail, each can be presented in Christmas-colored dishes.
