Rescued at Sunset Cliffs

Surfer hauled up in basket walks away after being hit by board

On October 23rd at approximately 5 p.m., lifeguards, fire-rescue personnel, and paramedics answered a call at the Ladera Street parking lot in Sunset Cliffs Natural Park.

Seven emergency vehicles, one boat, and a jet ski took part in the rescue of a 20-something woman. The rescue team, using ropes, pulleys, and a back sled, pulled the woman up the cliff to the parking lot where she was examined by the paramedics.

The woman declined to go to the hospital and started walking up the hill with her male companion. She was unable to carry her 8'0" soft board so I carried it for her.

The Point Loma Nazarene University student suffered no apparent trauma but she seemed a little dazed and unfocused. She was bent over at the waist a little as she trudged up the hill. She said she had been hit in the head by her surfboard. She seemed unable to verbalize what had happened to her, though she did comment on the skill of the rescuers and the unique feeling of being hauled up the cliff in a basket.
