Belly Up stages alt-country band Drive-By Truckers on Thursday.

Belly Up stages alt-country band Drive-By Truckers on Thursday.

Thursday 13
When Syd Barret took to his garden shed and my Piper at Gates of Dawn and Madcap Laughs cassettes were played out, I deliriously drowned in the Legendary Pink Dots catalog, born again to British psychedelia and heady poetics. I guess The Maria Dimension (1991) is my favorite LPD play thing, as I have it in every format known to humankind. In fact, I am spinning “Disturbance” as I type and pretty dizzy with anticipation for Thursday night when the Dots stop at Soda Bar on their U.S. Aquarian tour. Listen up: if you go to their website (legendarypinkdots.org) and print out a gig poster for the Soda show, they will impart to you “one free label exclusive CD.” I’ll even link that URL directly to the poster for you, so all you got to do is push print. Colorado-based spacetronica band Orbit Service and German super-droners Armchair Migraine Journey will set up this Go-To show.... “Gangstabilly” singer/songwriters Patterson Hood and Mike Cooley of Drive-By Truckers tapped that Athens, Georgia source for authentic roots music with a modern-rock edge. And their relentless touring and “new-and-improved South” storytelling have made them one relevant rock band. This year’s American Band may be their most political set yet, and given the current Trump’d-up presidential race and flare-ups from the nation’s systemic racism, their timing couldn’t be better to apply a little electric guitar and passionate songsmithing to what ails u.s. Fans of the alt-country brand, go get some Southern comfort when the Truckers pull into Belly Up in Solana Beach.... Else on Thursday: From England (ca. 1980), 2 Tone ska revival band the Selecter skanks into Casbah...Brooklyn’s soulful electropop Mothxr plays the Voodoo Room at House of Blues...and garage-psych locals the Gargoyles pull in to Whistle Stop.

Friday 14
There’s a shot in the video for Ryley Walker’s new single “The Roundabout” of a little kid lighting fireworks with a blowtorch. That’s the sort of juvenile irreverence Walker brings to his dizzying folk songs. Simple, pretty, very well played, with an inescapable undertow of tasty acoustic riffs and his everyman vox. The Chicago-based singer/songwriter brings this year’s v. recommendable Golden Sings That Have Been Sung to Soda Bar Friday night. Tourmate Haley Fohr, aka Circuit des Yeux, will open the show.... Rob Crow’s inner doom-metal demon, Goblin Cock, headlines Casbah sets by Pinback Zach’s Systems Officer and the goth-rock duo Blood Ponies. Crow and the Cock are enjoying some well-deserved press for this year’s awesomely titled Necronomidonkeykongimicon, which is one energizing metal disc. Go get “Something Haunted” in your earholes and tell me you don’t love what Crow’s pop voice does to metal crunch. As the online Obelisk succinctly puts it, “Goblin Cock are obviously a goof on a lot of levels, but songwriting has never been one of them”.... Best of the rest on Friday: alt-rock vets Helio Sequence plug in at the Hideout after Genders...Brian Ellis, Glitter Wizard, and Loom fill a hard-rock bill at the Merrow...and Belly Up stages Prince tribute Erotic City after Ziggy Shuffledust and the Spiders From Mars bring back Bowie.

Sonic experimentalist Tobacco (Black Moth Super Rainbow) plugs in at Casbah on Saturday.

Saturday 15
Electronic artist Tom Fec, frontman of psych-rock outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow, rolls his Tobacco side into Casbah Saturday night. Tobacco’s show hits like fists of electroglitch and guitar that isn’t so much something to move to as something that moves you. Sonically physically moves you. With synth duo High Tides (“from the coastal shores of the mind”) and Toronto garage-goth trio Odonis Odonis setting it up, be ready for a four-hour freakout of noiserocktronica.... Soda Bar stages Helado Negro “+ guests.” Helado Negro is Ecuadorian-American singer/songwriter Roberto Carlos Lange, who sings in Spanish and English about what it means to be a Latin artist in trying times for most artists. He is touring in support of this year’s Private Energy, which critics seem to agree is his “most personal and vital work yet.” Helado Negro usually performs solo with choreography from the Tinsel Mammals, “silvery costumed humans who embody the movement of his compostions”.... And alsos Saturday nite: Black Heart Processioner Pall Jenkins plays solo at the Tower Bar...DJ/saxman GRiZ hitz the all-ages Soma stage with the future-funk sounds of this year’s Good Will Prevail...Hideout has Oakland indie-pop band Trails and Ways...and the L.A.-based indie folkies Magic Giant bound into Belly Up.

Follow the Crawler into next week...
