Local punk'd rock and roll quartet the Phantoms appear at Casbah Monday night!

Sunday 9
English “raga-rock” band Kula Shaker had a nice run in the UK in the ’90s, playing a psych-bent Britpop that read mystic and included Indian instruments such as sitar, tamboura, and tabla. Touring in support of this year’s K 2.0, Kula Shaker takes the stage at Belly Up after the local garage-psych group the Loons.... Best of the rest on Sunday finds Fat Possum folkies Felice Brothers at Casbah behind this year’s Life in the Dark. Aaron Lee Tasjan opens that show...Cali pop-punk quintet Tsunami Bomb goes off at Soda Bar after Oceanside Sound System and the Lexicons...while Austin hardcore band MDC (Millions of Dead Cops) will headline punk-rock sets by the Yucks, Sculpins, Wartorn, and Systematic Abuse at Brick by Brick.

Monday 10
Victor Penalosa’s (Baja Bugs, Zeros, Flamin’ Groovies) Phantoms jam punk and glam on their new self-titled disc. Be sure to catch up with the band in this week’s Jay Sanford–penned “Add some Phantoms to your day” music feature before catching them at Casbah with local groove-rock group Dirty Pennies and “cat pop” quartet Mittens.... Tuesday 11
Hard-rock guitarist Steve Vai (Zappa, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake) celebrates 25 years of his certified gold album Passion and Warfare at House of Blues. Vai sums up the storyline of Passion thusly: “Jimi Hendrix meets Jesus Christ at a party that Ben Hur threw for Mel Blanc.” Tony MacAlpine opens the show.... Otherwises: New York City–based brassy jam band Lucky Chops and our own jazzy jam band Taurus Authority split a bill at Casbah...while Portlandia’s singin’, pickin’, stompin’ Hopeless Jack headlines sets by our own sepia-toned folkies the G Burns Jug Band and alt-country artist Jake Loban at Soda Bar. For more on Mr. Loban, he is featured in this week’s “Hardcore Americana” Blurt.

Else: Cleveland-based heavy metal band Mushroomhead brings The Righteous & the Butterfly to Brick by Brick...while northa town, blue-eyed soul duo Honne drips into the Loft in La Jolla...and northa there, the Palms, “bridging the gap between Laurel Canyon folk and West Coast beats to give you the modern day ‘L.A. sound,’” will headline sets by local favorites Birdy Bardot and Grim Slippers at Belly Up in Solana Beach.
